Deferred/Rejected? The Official Mourning Page for Princeton SCEA 2016

I’d always maintained high eighties in that subject; this year got much harder, most people are getting 60’s and 70’s.

A have a similar concern. I didn’t know when we had to sent the Mid Year Report so I already sent it in with the EA app and it has poor grades (75-80%), even though I’m near the top of my class.
I have another series of mid-year-ish exams in Jan. Can I send in their grades in the Optional Report, or as a second Mid Year Report or something?
Also, about the Final Report. When is it due? My final grades are due in May, which is after the decision. Does that mean my Final Report is not really evaluative in my decision? Or is the Final Report the report of the last exams we take before the decision?

Please help, anyone! :/

dancingjuicedesu: at least you kind of know what got you deferred.

I don’t think they consider final reports. Only Mid-year ones.
The problem is that every school has different marking schemes, so that a 75% at one school may actually be equivalent to a 90% at another. I’m in the IB program, so I always have this problem (our grades are only inflated - bell-curved - properly in February). It’s up to your guidance counsellor to explain exactly where you place…something which I don’t think the counsellor at our school did, since everyone who applied got rejected/deferred. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.

haha i don’t think they specialize the deferral letters. thats too much work for the adcom. and i don’t know why i got deferred and i feel so bad right now. i feel like it’s because i applied for engineering without a sat 2 for chem or physics…and i explained why and everything and said i would like to be considered for arts and science instead if they don’t let me apply. but idk, i guess since engineering was my first choice, i was considered for engineering and not the strongest candidate. i should have just applied for arts and science if i had known :frowning: i’m so upset right now…and i already sent in my grades for first trimester as a senior and they were like my best grades ever…and i don’t know. so stressed. im gonna get rejected everywhere.

Everyone seems to have a reason why they got deferred. Please help in analyzing my reason: 1. not quirky enough essays
2. not good enough math things
3. SAT 2: math 2 800 chem 770 physics 720
4.?
and starrynight509: I did get only two sentences. So this must be a really rare situation; there’s something that I really need to have to show them in order to get in.
I just want to vent…

Oh, wow. I didn’t know this thread even existed until now. I was busy trying to console myself after seeing that I got deferred. What I basically did, was I got up at 4 AM the next morning and started mass-finishing and submitting (I started but didn’t finish a lot of apps because I was admittedly counting on Princeton) apps to other schools. I also went to a sleepover with my best friend because I knew it’d keep my mind off of it.

I’m also worried about what I’m going to do when I go back to school after the holidays. All my teachers were really supportive and have repeatedly reminded me to let them know if I have “any good news.” with the whole "hint hint nudge nudge kind of thing. It doesn’t help that an unprecedented number of kids from my school with similar stats as me got accepted EA/ED to Ivy League schools like Harvard and Yale (surprisingly none to Princeton, hmmm…) I’m seriously hoping that they just forget about my applying early to Princeton, since I won’t find out until April, anyway.

I don’t know, guys. I shed a few tears (all right, a LOT of tears) after I found out but now I’m just like: sigh ._.

Do any of you know if getting deferred from EA increases your chances in the RD round? And I’m wondering about the midyear reports as well. Will it really make that big of a difference (ie: tipping the scales to your favor so you get accepted) if it shows you did well in senior year or did they just say all that to make us feel better? I suspect that one of the main reasons I got deferred was because I didn’t submit the first-quarter grades of senior year like they recommended since my school only sends grades out after the end of each semester.

Oops. Sorry for this rather long post guys. Effect of dwelling on all this for the last few days, I guess. Oh, and juliamarie, I’m in the same boat as you in that I’m a lit-major-looking-into-the-creative-writing-program that has been published a couple of times/wanted me an author since I was little (and yes, working with professors like Joyce Carol Oates and Chang-rae Lee WOULD be a dream come true.) I got a good score on the math section on the SAT, but my other stats in terms of math aren’t that great. :/

Good luck to all of you that got deferred. Hopefully we’ll all have good news (even if it’s not from Princeton) by April.

Ugh, I just don’t even feel like getting up right now…

kokoro: holy crud we are legit twins-right down to the sat math and guidance counselors that do nothing!!! haha and i’ll bet you’re particularly angry because you know your essays had to have stood out, right??? i do not understand it-they’re looking to build up their cw …you’d think they’d jump at the opportunity…

and saugus i hear you, i’ve been too depressed to leave my house. but ugh we gotta keep moving, and i really need to look at those other apps…

@juliamarie Haha. If we do both get into Princeton, we should totally meet up! And yeah, I’m actually supposed to be working on my apps for other colleges but I keep finding myself here…in the Princeton threads. sigh I actually have an interview with another college tomorrow, but I’m afraid that I’ll just randomly blurt out: “PRINCETOOOOON! sob” in the middle of it. x)

Hey guys,

Besides the mid-year report, how do send stuff for Princeton to consider for the RD round (after being deferred). I got a few awards and I’m considering sending in an arts supplement. When is this due?

Did any of y’all submit quarter grades? I’m wondering if that might be why I was deferred. Nobody from my school (an elite boarding school) got admitted early this year, and it was also the first year we implemented a policy forbidding the release of quarter grades. Could this be why?

nope and that could easily be the issue…i hate my school.

We should make a chat group for all the deferrees/rejectees to help each other out.

Dear everyone in this post…
Do you not understand where you applied!? It’s Princeton, the best of the best, the top of the top, the leader in nearly all universities. So you got deferred, that’s not even that bad. It’s better than being rejected! It means you were actually competitive in their applicant pool. And you still have a chance. They don’t want you sending piles of extra crap to them, you’ll just annoy them. They don’t have the time. They can’t accept every perfect scoring valedictorian with leadership qualities that outshine Obama. There are too many of us with great grades and overachieving courses and great SAT scores. Which is why they need to leave some space, since they don’t know how many more of us overachievers are going to apply later on. Just be happy you weren’t rejected, and remember this is Princeton we are talking about.

Have a nice day.

I’m so glad I found this thread - I was seriously disappointed on Thursday. Princeton is still my first choice, but my mid-term is going to be so awful… Does anyone have any tips as to where we go from here? I’m getting mixed feedback about sending another letter of recommendation… etc. Hang in there everyone!! We’re all in the same boat.

Me too me too! I had a prof’s rec for SCEA already… and there are no major math competitions that have results out before May… hopefully Princeton’s SCEA standard is high compared to other schools…

Anyone writing new essays that are more unique/quirky/desperate?

My SCEA essays are too formal I think, not enough “me”. How personal do you guys think is too personal for common app essay?

The New Yort Times has noticed the discussion on this forum:
[Early Line on Early Admissions - NYTimes.com](<a href=“Early Line on Early Admissions - The New York Times”>Early Line on Early Admissions - The New York Times)

OMIGOSH!!! WE MADE THE NEWS!!! <3 thisrockss!!!

haha ohh ny times, don’t hate, we’re just venting  but they do make a good point, maybe we should chill a little.

and uhmm @maybirthday i’m not writing a new essay but i am sending in another arts supplement…and i entered a quiz bowl out of sheer desperation. (i know, i’m spineless) my college writing teacher just offered another LOR and i might take her up on it

and ik my teachers are telling me that your voice is the most important part of college essays so maybe focus on that?
