Deferred Student Acceptance Rate

Hello,

Is anyone able to offer some insight as to the amount of students that the U of R defers from EDII? Additionally, does anyone know anything about the acceptance rate for these deferred students and how it compares to the overall acceptance rate?

Thank you,
DR

Doc,

To be clear, are you talking about Waitlisted students (alternate list) or are you talking about Early Decision postponed students? ED II and Early Notification aren’t the same thing, so I just want to make sure I understand which population you’re curious about.

Best,

Hello,

Thanks for your quick reply. To clarify, I am asking about Early Decision II applicants who have been postponed (i.e.: decision comes out in April).

Thanks again,

Doc

In the deferred letter I believe it mentions that ED deferred applicants will get another look in the beginning of April. The letter also encourages the applicant to send us any new available grades (usually the Mid Year Report satisfies this), any new test scores that you’ve taken in the past two months, and any other accolades/accomplishments received recently which would help improve their admit chances.

Deferred applicants were always deferred for a reason, and it usually has to deal with the competitiveness of the applicant pool. In general we are expecting to see high school GPA’s around 3.8 unweighted, SAT’s around 1950 or higher, ACT scores of 29 or higher, etc. If no efforts were made to improve previous marks / scores, then it is unlikely that a deferred student would get an admit offer. I would recommend that you call our office to indicate your continued interest in Rochester and to provide us with any updates.

UR never sets a quota for the number of ED students that we defer. We wish we didn’t have to defer anyone! But, alas, the competition is fierce.

The overall acceptance rate from last year was 36% (this year is slightly more competitive due to the increase in total applications). A deferred student’s admit chances are correlated to how much their grades / scores improve since the first review.

Best of luck! Give us a call with any questions/concerns.
