Deferred university of minnesota

was deferred today. was anyone else?? applied to CEHD. does it really take until march to hear a decision?

I had two friends deferred yesterday who applied to CLA as well as CEHD. You may hear before then but it could take some time.

what were your stats is you don’t mind me asking?

18 ACT… I know, horrible. Unweighted gpa is 3.8, weighted is 4.1. I have taken roughly 15 college courses through PSEO. Very involved throughout my community and my soccer program. I think the only reason I got deferred is my act score. My dad was a professor there, and my uncle and grandma went there as well.

@tomgoph1234 - how did you figure you’d get into your dream school with an 18 ACT? Only 7% of CEHD enrollees have an ACT less than 19, and most likely they have extenuating factors such as very low SES or first generation, etc. What is your Plan B?

Chin up. Over 30 years ago, I took the SAT with results that were beyond horrible. I entered a lower level state school, got good grades and later transferred to the flagship university of the state where I then resided. I graduated and took the GRE for graduate school with equally dismal results, but somehow talk my way into the University of Texas at Austin where I earned a masters degree. Some people don’t do well on standardized tests, but that’s not a sign of college success or potential. Your grades are good and if you’re serious about college as you seem to be, then I’m 100% positive that you will do well. Good luck and pursue the future with enthusiasm!

why wasn’t I rejected right away then? I was deferred?

@tomgoph1234 From what someone said earlier, UMN may be only deferring or accepting in the first round. It may not be true, but I know some other colleges do that for their preliminary round. Also, standardized tests aren’t everything, and your GPA seems to make up for some of it. I have a very bad GPA but my ACT is in the 75th percentile for CEHD, so we will see if I get deferred. Good luck to all!

I have another thought too. There was some mention of holistic reviews. They may automatically put you in a holistic review queue if you don’t meet their GPA and standardized test norms, and that kind of review takes more time. My kid is the opposite from you – high test scores and lower GPA – and he also hasn’t heard anything.

@tomgoph1234 - For anyone applying by 11/1 have only two potential decision. Admit or Defer. Other two Wait list and Deny will be for Jan 1 date (and anyone defer from 11/1 pool)

@RP1010 are you sure? How did you find this out?

@RP1010 is not correct. From the FAQ’s:

What are the possible admission decisions that an applicant could receive?

By the end of January, students who submit a complete application by the November 1 first deadline will receive one of the following decisions:

Admit: The student has been admitted to the University of Minnesota.

Defer: The admissions committee has completed a holistic review of the application but has not yet made a final decision. Deferred applications will be reviewed a second time, taking into consideration the number of spaces available in the freshman class and competitiveness of the entire pool of applicants who met the January 1 application deadline. By March 31, deferred applicants will receive either an admit, waitlist, or deny decision. Frequently asked questions about defer decisions.

Deny: We are not able to offer freshman admission. Students who are denied admission are encouraged to apply for transfer admission for a future semester. Transfer admission is also competitive so it is important that students achieve a strong academic record at another college or university. Frequently asked questions about deny decisions.

By the end of March, students who submit a complete application by the January 1 second deadline will receive one of the following decisions:

Admit: The student has been admitted to the University of Minnesota.

Waitlist: The student’s application has been placed on a waitlist. Although we have determined that the applicant is academically prepared to succeed at the University of Minnesota, we must make certain that we do not exceed the number of spaces available in each of the freshman-admitting colleges. Waitlisted applicants will receive an update on the status of their applications by April 15. If we determine that spaces remain available, the overall strongest applicants will be admitted from the waitlist. Frequently asked questions about waitlist decisions.

Deny: We are not able to offer freshman admission. Students who are denied admission are encouraged to apply for transfer admission for a future semester. @tomgoph1234 I think you have a chance. your GPA is really good and you have all those college courses that you took. Just hang in there and wait, you can still get accepted. Is there any chance you can redo the ACT or even try the SAT? That might be one option. But if you did your best and gave it your all and still got that score, then just wait. I think you have a chance. Dont give up.!!

@tomgoph1234 there are a few possible reasons why you weren’t denied. The most obvious would be that, despite your 18 ACT, your application wasn’t weak enough to reject. However, you should reasonably expect a waitlist as the one piece of objective information you’ve provided them is three points below the national average. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news on that and I truly hope I’m wrong. But that’s why I asked you about a Plan B.

Your GPA and PSEO courseload are fine if not superb (a 3.8 unweighted with 15 college courses is truly admirable). Given these attributes the 18 ACT seems way out of place. If I were an adcom I’d be scratching my head. Did you provide them with an explanation?

I was differed today. I had a 27 ACT and 3.5 GPA. What do you guys think my chances are?

Son deferred CBS. 3.5 GPA 33 ACT. Varsity and club sports. State honors music. So on and so on.
Both parents alums too.
He has other options and is moving on. Good luck to everyone else.

rstdane1- Surprised to see your son was deferred from CBS. S1 had a slightly higher GPA, but the same ACT. Rigorous schedule. Excellent varsity athlete, but don’t see where that matters, as he won’t be playing varsity at U of M. Unlike you, we are not alums. I do see S1 being a very good fit for a Business/Economics program…sharp in that regard.

Perhaps your son might be high up on a waiting list?

He’s not a finished product as a student and he definitely left some points on the table with his GPA, but the hope was that it would be offset by the standardized test score. I guess not.

I called today to see if CLA might be another option and received a weird response from the admissions counselor. Something to the effect that he has already been considered for CLA as part of his application review (even though it was not listed as a secondary on his application). Hopefully once the dust settles he will get an offer from CBS or CLA.

Regarding the varsity/club athlete…I agree it would not matter in the sense they will not be playing sports at UMTC, but a 15 hour per week commitment throughout the school year (and associated physical exhaustion) should count for something, IMO.

@rstdane1 they are giving priority to those who listed CLA as a first or 2nd choice. He can probably formally request a switch to CLA as first choice, but then he would give up his chance to be admitted to CBS altogether. Since you said earlier that he has other options, he might just want to “go for it” with CBS. It’s been an increasingly difficult college to be admitted to; however, as his ACT is above the 75th percentile he stands a fair chance. Fingers crossed for him.

Totally understand the frustration that the time commitment to HS athletics should count. Most likely it did, just not as much as GPA/class rank, course load and test scores. Those checking the Communication Center on their MyU account are noticing that UMN handed out some “strong deferred” designations. Perhaps your son is one - has he checked his MyU?
