OK, I'm considering taking a gap year. What do you have to do for Michigan, can you just defer, or do you have to make the deposit? And if you make the deposit, is it supposed to be forbidden to apply to more colleges the next year?

Alright, I am almost positive I am going to do a gap year. Does anyone at all know what to tell Michigan? Do I have to pay a deposit to keep my offer for next year?

You'll have to apply again after your gap year.

Please don't respond if you don't know what you're talking about.

Deferred admission is only offered to admitted freshmen who wish to delay their enrollment at the U-M because of personal needs or interests outside of college or university level academic course work. Please note: the deadline for requesting a deferment for Fall admission is August 1st of the admittance year if the student paid their enrollment deposit by May 1.

Valid reasons for requesting an admission deferment would include (but not be limited to):
military or public service
unique travel or work opportunity
illness substantiated by a doctor's written confirmation
cultural enrichment opportunity

Invalid reasons for requesting an admission deferment would include (but not be limited to):
enrollment in another United States college or university program

A request to defer your admission may be submitted in one of the following ways:

(1) send a letter requesting deferment for either 1 or 2 semesters as well as a statement regarding reasons to:

Office of Undergraduate Admissions

1220 Student Activities Building

515 E. Jefferson St. Ann Arbor, MI

48109-1316

(2) You may send a request to our office asking us to update your application. You may begin this process by selecting the Ask A Question tab (located above) at the top. Type "Deferment Request" in the Subject heading and in the space below indicate why you are requesting a deferment. You must be "logged in" to the system in order to submit a request, and in order to log on to the system you must create (or have previously created) an account. To log-in, please begin the process by selecting this link.

If you meet the guidelines for requesting a deferment, you will be sent a deferment contract. Upon return receipt of the signed contract, a deferred admission status will be granted, and the application file will be updated accordingly. A new admittance letter and Enrollment Deposit Form (EDR) will be sent out in the term before the student's updated admittance term.

Thanks!

I'm still not 100% on a few things, I should probably just call. I need to find out if you have to pay the enrollment deposit, and if you are required to matriculate if you ask them to defer it a year.
