Deferring Admission?

I was accepted to Cal Poly today as an English major, and it’s my top choice. However, I have committed to be a foreign exchange student through Rotary in the fall for a year [I am taking a gap year and will be enrolled in high school… again]

I called Admissions and they said to defer admission you had to write a letter to the Vice Provost with a “compelling” reason… My reason is partially financial. I cannot currently afford to attend Cal Poly, but during my gap year, my mom will have a full-time job, I will receive my inheritance, and finances won’t be an issue at all.

Do you think since I won’t be attending another college, and I am actually doing something productive that they will let me defer my admission? Does anyone have experience with this? I am kinda scared I won’t get in if I re-apply due to the fact that my senior year has been rather rocky…

Bump bump bump~

Do what the admissions office said and write a compelling letter. i wouldnt worry to much about your senior year grades. i got accepted with low numbers. dont stress to much and good luck!

It comes down to what you really want. If you want to go to school now, apply for loans and then immediately pay them off when you get your inheritance.

If you want to travel abroad, apply for the deferral and hope you get it and do that. Either way, you need to be decisive.

Best of luck! You have more choices than most kids.
