<p>Let's assume I won a scholarship that in no way will benefit me this year, but may possibly actually help next year.</p>
<p>If I can get the permission of the distributor of the scholarship, can I defer it for a year? Or will whatever college I'm attending jump down my throat and do other not so nice things?</p>
<p>My son has deferred several of his scholarships without any consequences at the university. The distributors have been happy to assist because they want their money to be put to the best use possible. What we did was use the bigger corporate ones first (such as Best Buy, MN Twins, etc.) and deferred local scholarships since they were easiest to contact and were happy to oblige.</p>

<p>I'm glad to hear that. In my son's case, he had received a scholarship from his university, along with two other substantial scholarships that were renewable for four years. So far he has completed two years of college with no loans. When I said he used the bigger corporate ones first, this was in addition to the four-year scholarships -- and I meant bigger as in the size of the corporation not the amount of the scholarships. He was able to use several of his $1,000 scholarships and actually received a "change check" back from the university which was deposited into his checking account. He used part of them his freshman year, deferred part until his sophomore year, and actually has three scholarships that he has still deferred and will use his junior or senior year. Plus, he used others to pay for a summer school class and a J-Term class. Hope things go as smoothly with your funds as they have with his!</p>
