I was torn between buisness and computer science when I came across a MIS degree. What kind of jobs would I be able to find with this degree? My ultimate goal would be to become a CTO (Chief Technology Officer) or start my own buisness. Is this degree useful or should I get a degree in something that focusues only on the IT side, then get and MBA or something? I'm still in high school btw, so I have time to decide. Thanks for any help!

bump…

the consensus around here seems to be that CS<MIS. not all MIS programs adequately prepare their graduates for jobs like business analyst or database administrator. if your school is well-connected to industry, however, the MIS degree should be fine

It depends on the school’s curriculum. Do they make you take anything in CSIS or CIS? Such as programming or system maintenance? If they do not, then you would be better doing a double major in business admin and CIS or a business admin degree with CIS minor if you can. My school requires all MIS majors to take a programming course, a system maintenance course, as well as 2 elective courses in either networking, web design, multimedia, or database (CSIS, INFO, ERP). Without those components MIS is not very marketable.

An MIS degree is useful for those who want to work on the technological side of the business world, so it seems like you are on the right track to finding a degree that matches your interests. Check out a [sample course listing](<a href=“http://www.ccis.edu/day/academics/degrees.asp?BSMIS?utm_campaign=FRM001&utm_id=FRM001"]sample”>http://www.ccis.edu/day/academics/degrees.asp?BSMIS?utm_campaign=FRM001&utm_id=FRM001) for an MIS degree to see what kinds of classes you will be taking.

As far as [job prospects](<a href=“http://degreedirectory.org/articles/Management_Information_Systems_MIS_What_Are_Popular_Careers_in_Management_Information_Systems.html"]job”>What Are Popular Careers in Management Information Systems (MIS)?) go, you can work as a systems analyst, software engineer, web developer or any other kind of IT job within a company. As far as becoming a CTO, i think that is possible with an MIS degree, but I’m sure it would require more education than a bachelor’s degree as well as a lot of hard work!
