Degree Paths

Typically, what does the averge U ot T student obtain after their undergraduate study degree wise? do most get specialist degrees, majors, minors, or what? Also, how does this compare to american schools?

thanks!!

That’s a broad question and it depends on your program of study. For example everyone talks about U of T and McGill having high acceptance rates, when truly U.S students just don’t understand the Canadian university admission system. Canadian universities have an automatic acceptance rate every year for every program generally. High schoolers then apply to the school they know will accept them. Meaning 80- 90% of those applying know they will get acceptance. Generally those who don’t meet the standard don’t apply so there are significantly less rejections than U.S universities cause everyone knows who’s accepted or not. That said, schools like U of T, are *very *rigorous… In fact, U.S news directly compared U of T’s academics to Harvard and Yale. For example, some say that 50% of business students will be dropped from the major their sophomore year because they didn’t cut it… U of T filters out students once they apply… like other Canuck schools… after admissions NOT before. I am not sure how accurate that number is… but out of the five commerce friends I had three got dropped from the program, including my step brother. The school doesn’t baby you… It’s ivy league academics without the Ivy League pampering or support… well the support is there…but you have to take the initiative and go for it… if you are sinking…no one will come to your rescue. I am not sure I answered your question. But hope I helped anyway.

Most of my classmates at U of T did majors not specialists. I only had two friends who did specialists… keep in mind the specialists option generally precludes double majoring. So if you are interested in learning a world of things, double major rather than specializing. But there’s nothing stopping you from feeling out your program and deciding on a specialist or major. I switched majors three times…you are not locked into anything right now.

thanks alot ivyleaguer. may i ask what you studied at u of t and how difficult your course load was?

Ultimately political science and sociology. It was difficult but doable. Frankly, I liked the academic rigor. If you are not a strong essay writer, practice those skills from now and keep developing them. You will need it.

what is the social/ party scene like

I answered this question on one of your previous posts.

oh yes you did, sorry about that. thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I really appericate it
