degree = your smart?

Depends on a few factors...

Your GPA, which, while not an indicator of everything, shows how hard and well you can work. The average 4.0 student is probably smarter than your average 2.1 student.

What you did with your time in college. This, to me, includes broadening your perspective on the world. Someone who participated in a few activites (hello - networking!) and discovered a passion outside the classroom is most likely not just "book smart" but also "people smart". Both skill sets are important in the real, working world if you want to get ahead. The partiers tend to be good with people, but not school. The bookworms are the opposite. To be the "smartest", I'd think you would want somewhere in the middle - the ideal would be a genuis with excellent people skills, haha.

To some extent, your major. Engineering would imply that you are much better with numbers than the average person. There are of course exceptions (brilliant people in "easy" majors, stupid peple in tough ones), but a lot of people go to college just so they have that piece of paper that qualifies them for a job that isn't minimum wage. I would say that society would probably consider you smarter than they would have if you had done something like communications or film studies (come on, watching movies for 4 years? haha, no offense to FST majors).

So yeah... :)

anyone with normal IQ can earn it through efforts

degree = can stick to something for four years and follow it through to the end.

It mostly means you have some work ethic and passable intellect.

My smart? Why is this about my smart?

It just means you're not one of the dumbest people around, but the converse is not necessarily true.

......

My first and last post here.

I am a senior in highschool right now with a 2.1GPA. I will not attending college next year. I have never in my life ever cared about the pointless facts that school "attempts" to drill into you.

I run a website that pulls in over 100k a month from gold exchanges.
http://www.goldexchange.eu/index.php?lang=en

In my opinion people who do nothing but focus on school are the morons.

Have fun working for someone else making them richer for the rest of your lives. :)

Just remember: Innovation > schooling

I honestly don't care if I spelled something wrong...... so don't bother correcting me. The only reason I found this forum is because someone was browsing these forums before I got on this computer.

bahah. I agree with the above poster. A lot of the grinds at my high school were mindless robots that are waiting to become corporate drones, cubical wage slaves. Good for them! You go a 4.0 GPA? Great, you wasted your teen years, and got nothing for it!

he quality of undergrad. universities is so incredibly variable in the U.S. I talked to an MBA prof at McGill (previously tenured at Columbia Business School) who stated that only 50 U.S. universities are in any way respected/worthwhile, along with 30-50 liberal arts schools. Now, he also mentioned that the top 10 Universities in the U.S. are the best in the world and offer an incredible return on investment even when taking the cost of tuition into account. But then you have close to a thousand schools in the U.S. (some of which are public but many of which are actually expensive privates) that award bogus degrees and leave students w/o a real education. I spent a year at one, and I won't name it. But even UMass, a public school in a state that prides itself on liberal, progressive politics and an educated populace, home to some of the best colleges in the world, is barely mediocre. Simply put, there aren't any quality controls or regulations in place to really verify the quality of a degree in the states, which means unless you went to a top 50 college, there is no verification that you are smart.

Well in your particular case proton, I would say the answer is a resounding "no."

BigVick, you're my hero.

Why thank you....

As I said before:

Going to college and getting a degree does not show how smart you are..

It just shows how much pointless BS you can tolerate.

From my freshman - senior years of highschool:

I acquired and currently hold

51% of TheGoldCasino.com (U.S residents are forbidden).
100% of BetGold.com (U.S residents are forbidden)
75% Of Goldexchange.eu
Started a investment company SelfGold.com(Closed now) made 50k off it.

I consider myself much smarter then someone who goes to a top college.

Just remember

Innovation > College
Real Life Knowledge > College

Have fun wasting 50k for 4 years of college just so you can come work for people like me :)

i dont believe you bigvick.

bigvick's write, college is a compleat waste of money

if it is true, bigvick is a rare case. its kinda like hitting the lottery.

Everything you do in life revolves around the element of luck.

Last post from me....

Now I am not trying to bash you, bigvick, but think of it this way. From what your saying is every american college age student should forgo a higher education and try to invest a business of some kind. Not going to happen. If you did what you say you did in high school then great, good for you. Not everyone is going to have the luck you did, plus alot of people use college as a means to grow and learn about themselves. Self-discovery is a very positive thing. There is no reason to tell people they are morons because they gain an education makes you sound like the moron. If you consider yourself smarter than most college students maybe you should take a second and consider your grammer usage, because not address intelligently makes you sound stupid. Good on you with the goldexchange, if that is true, but there are many aspects to life.

English is not my first or second language so I am sorry if I am not perfect....(I am from Lativa)

In response to your post:

I am glad you decided that spending 50k was worth it.

To me spending 50k to learn about yourself is a bunch of BS.

The only reason I posted here was because someone implied that getting a piece of paper makes you smarter then those who do not. I strongly disagree with this statement.

If you did not know, Lativa was once part of the USSR and is a very poor third world country. I started with 10.00$ 3 years ago..... and have spent the last 3 years working 19 hours a day and 20+ on weekends to get where I am.

Luck only gets you to a certain point then intellegence takes over.

Real life knowledge > Whatever BS you learn/discover in College.

When you are out in the "REAL" world you will understand.... until then you are a ignorant fool.

TLDR:

Degrees in no way reflect the intellegence of a person. This is my "OWN" opinion. I can't be wrong since it's mine opinion.

This is a example with made up numbers
X+3x-4x32bC+3x = 4c*5x + 234 - 2343 +324234X

^ Being able to solve a problem like that does not show intellegence. It just shows how much BS you allow to enter your mind.

..... I keep breaking my rule about not posting anymore but some of you infuriate me.

@ bigvick

Well you're right about a few things. College is in no way an indicator of intelligence, there are very bright individuals who only have a H.S. diploma, and some idiots who have Master's Degrees. However to say that no one should attend college is pushing it. College is not about proving yourself smarter than everyone else, or even getting a dream job, it is about personal discovery.

Bigvick, if you have so much going on then why are you wasting your time on this forum just so you can brag about yourself instead of being humble. Not everyone can get away with not getting a college education and be successful! Besides, college is more than just making a huge salary it's also about making lifelong friends and being surrounded by peers with similar interests.

I believe him. One of my friends owns a forex site that was recently bought out. He gets a commision on every single trade.

I've got something I'm cooking that's kinda similar. In any case, can't knock the hustle.
