I'm trying to decide between University of Maryland, University of Delaware and Pitt. I'm going to be a Biology major and probably pre-med. Any advice?

Choose Pitt! Great school with great academics

All of them are great. UMD has the reputation.

What are the cost differentials?

Are you in state for any of them? If you are, go to the one that is in state.

I can speak to the benefits of Pitt. With UPMC, there are a multitude of opportunities to volunteer and to become involved in research.

With a Bio degree, you will have to go to med school after, so I would say Pitt. UPMC has a monopoly of the city and the surrounding areas so there are lots of opportunities for research and med school. Delaware is the worst school. They have no med school, and you have to apply through the Jefferson program, which I believe they only allow 2 students per year go through.

I do not know much about Delaware but I was accepted to and have visited both Pitt and UMD. I loved UMD and really enjoyed my visit to Pitt.

Maryland definitely has the strongest reputation out of the three schools, Delaware being the worst out of the three. Maryland is also about a 15 minute metro ride to DC, so you can keep a traditional college campus while also having easy access to a major city. Maryland has its own medical school and is also fairly close to Johns Hopkins(possible research opportunities). They are big on sports but Pitt has that also.

Pitt from what I gathered is pretty strong in the sciences department. I really liked the city feel of the campus although it is in Oakland but a free 5 min bus ride away from Pittsburgh. The biggest this it was lacking for me was a traditional campus but I loved how close it was to Pittsburgh but I prefer the city of Washington DC. Also for me personally the drive was 8 hours to get to Pitt which definitely effected my selection.

I would say visit both if you haven’t and choose which ever of the two is closer and cheaper for you(especially since you are considering med school.

For biology and premed, pitt all the way. The only reason i would choose something different out of those three is if you were a maryland resident. I would choose umdcp if that was your case. Whatever you decide, still apply to pitt for med school, ive heard people raving its a top ten from most and even as high as a top 5 med program from others. Either way, its a pretty prestigious med (and premed) program!
