Hi, I just got accepted into both Univeristy of Maryland and Pittsburgh but having trouble deciding which one to go. I am still undecided but maybe majoring is biology, research and pre med.
Which location is safer ? My family don’t wanted me to go to either because I live in NJ and they think both colleges are far away. Which I don’t wanted to stay in NJ.
Please give some options and advices
Is your decision going to be based on which is safer? They are both located in major cities. Pitt is in a good area but it is a city. Crime happens. You just have to be smart about walking alone at night, etc. I am not really familiar with UMd but have driven around the area and its very urban.
Are they both affordable? Are your parents willing to pay the extra over what Rutgers would cost? If distance is the issue, its probably easier to get to UMd from NJ since you can just take the train down to DC. Pitt is a little more difficult being on the other side of PA.
I know that Pitt is good for biology and pre-med and has a lot of research and volunteering opportunites. I don’t know about UMd.
Is it a money issue at all? My daughter got in to both schools (plus Rutgers), she only got $5000 a year from Pitt, so that’s a no, waiting on UMD. UMASS, UD, Temple, and Bing are still on the list with decent merit, waiting on UCONN. My oldest went to Rutgers, New Brunswick is still a city, the next TCNJ, right next to lovely Trenton. I think many colleges are around some sketchy areas, but do a good job keeping students safe (my daughter is at UD and they have a crime alert notification for students, on campus police, and escorts). Have you been able to visit in person? We are struggling with this, but I think it’s important to get a feel for the campus.
Personally, I’ve heard from others that they love Pitt and it has been very student-friendly. Maryland is fine, I do believe safety wise it there is more crime than at Pitt though.
Daughter is finishing up her 1st year at Pitt for nursing and has NEVER been happier. Great teachers, great group of kids and lots to do in the area. She really never has to leave campus because the surrounding area is filled with restaurants, shops and a great park and of course Carnegie Mellon is down the road. She has not felt unsafe even once…even when venturing downtown…but as with any college you are attending, never go anywhere alone and never leave a friend alone. If you come together leave together. Best of luck!
