Hi, I just checked my Cal Grant status and earlier it said "pending" but now says "not awarded" and i met all the criteria for the A and B grants. I don't understand why. It does not even say as listed in the status options "NOT AWARDED You did not meet the criteria and have been disqualified from this Cal Grant.". My score for it should have been around 150 as well. Any idea of what I can do to try to get it awarded?

You need to check the website for the Contact Us section and politely (and urgently) ask for clarification. If there is a phone #, call.

While you are on hold, go carefully through the criteria and see if there is any spot of any sort that someone else might interpret differently than you did.

For instance, if it says meets US Selective Service requirements, that means you have signed up with Selective service if you are over 18 and male. If you skipped that registration, you get booted (this one is an easy fix).

Go through each of the criteria and search your brain to see where you think the hiccup is. And DO talk to the fin aid office/grant administrators to see what they say is amiss.

If you are sure you meet all the criteria - income limits, asset limits, GPA, CA resident, graduated from CA HS, met March 2 deadline for FAFSA and GPA verification, going to a CA college. etc. Contact them and ask why.

Remember that income contributions to retirement accounts like 401(k)s although not taxed are added back in for CalGrant and FAFSA purposes so become part of the gross income,

Will do. Looked over the requirement pdf and I met all requirements. I met the sept 2nd deadline for CC’s and i have a college gpa greater than a 2.4 which is required for the grants A & B. Thanks guys. I’ll give them a call tomorrow then try getting an appointment at my school’s financial aid office.

You mention a Cal Grant score so you were in the running for a Competitive Cal Grant, yes? Not an Entitlement Cal Grant. Only a limited number of new Competitive Cal Grants are handed out with the two deadlines: March 2 and September 2 (current CCC students only). That September 2 deadline has always seemed a pointless waste to me, but that’s a complaint for another time ;)

There are any number of other reasons you could have been disqualified. CSAC should be able to give you the exact reason so calling them will be a good thing for you. We can only speculate here without the specifics of your case. That said, though, I do highly suspect it has everything to do with you just simply did not make the cut for the Competitive.

Are you transferring fall 2012? If so, reapply before the March 2 deadline. That is when you can be eligible for the Transfer Entitlement Cal Grant assuming you meet all the other qualifications still.

Good luck getting things cleared up :)

I’m transferring Spring '12. That’s the problem for me. Since I missed the March 2nd deadline I can’t get the Transfer Entitlement Grant (which would REALLY help) and I can’t wait until Fall to transfer either (my program will be impacted at my school of choice). Would I be able to apply for the transfer entitlement grant for fall semester if I go spring?

You’re asking the wrong crowd. Basically CC is a giant gossip site. You can learn some helpful stuff but the folks who run the CalGrant program are the ones whose opinion matters.

And you have to talk to someone about your case, this year. What happened to someone else, last term may be under a different budget year and rules may have changed.
