@4kids4colleges A great thing about Denison is that it is really easy to get to. Route 161 from the airport side of Columbus is beautiful divided highway, even though it is a state route. By flying in to Cincy or Columbus seeing both Centre and Denison would be very doable (schools are about 4 hours apart, or so).
I think D got into Denison. A big envelope arrived yesterday but she is away on her senior trip and I promised I wouldn’t open it.
We really, really like Denison. I had been there with my dad in 2002 for a special reunion (he had been stationed there during WWII with the Army Air Corps). I was really impressed then with the huge outpouring of support for the vet alums. I heard a great lecture that weekend from a young English prof, who is still there.
I was back on campus with D last summer for her visit and was equally impressed. They paired her up with a current student who had gone to D’s high school, for a tour. This was great because they could compare notes on h.s., as well as on potential colleges and majors. In a state that has a lot of beautiful lacs, Denison’s campus is definitely near the top. It sits on a hilly ridge. A few miles to the east is the largest complex of prehistoric earthworks (including an ancient observatory) in the US, so it is a very special area. There is a large natural area adjacent to campus.
The interview D had was the best of all her visits to any college. The interviewer (an admissions officer) was amazing. She put D at ease, asked great questions, was informative & encouraging. She made D feel great about her visit.
The facilities are generally outstanding. There are some new academic buildings, and a spectacular swimming complex. (D was impressed that the swimming pool floor apparently can be raised and lowered.) They have an arts quad at the foot of campus that is really cool (Denison also offers a BFA, a little bit unusual for an lac of its size). Dorms are okay–about in the middle for what we’ve seen at lacs. Food is very good, I believe.
Two slight disappointments. I don’t think they have a big theatre complex that would be on a par with Centre or Skidmore, for example. May be wrong about that, but we didn’t see it on our tour. Other slight drawback is the library. The bookstacks are ancient. There is a newer lobby/reading room addition, but over all it didn’t compare to brighter, more vibrant libraries that we have seen at other lacs. But this is really quibbling. Overall, facilities are outstanding.
A nice touch there–they put their admissions office right in the center of campus, down a short path from the prettiest, least obtrusive parking garage that I have seen on any lac campus. Really thoughtful planning.
D has several friends who attend currently. One is gifted in math, and is very happy there.
It’s definitely a small town atmosphere just off campus, but Columbus is very close. Great restaurants, concerts, NHL hockey, etc are all very accessible. They have a large endowment and appear to be financially very strong. It’s not at all hard to see why applications have jumped so dramatically.
