Denison Class of 2019 RD Thread

@4kids4colleges A great thing about Denison is that it is really easy to get to. Route 161 from the airport side of Columbus is beautiful divided highway, even though it is a state route. By flying in to Cincy or Columbus seeing both Centre and Denison would be very doable (schools are about 4 hours apart, or so).

I think D got into Denison. A big envelope arrived yesterday but she is away on her senior trip and I promised I wouldn’t open it.

We really, really like Denison. I had been there with my dad in 2002 for a special reunion (he had been stationed there during WWII with the Army Air Corps). I was really impressed then with the huge outpouring of support for the vet alums. I heard a great lecture that weekend from a young English prof, who is still there.

I was back on campus with D last summer for her visit and was equally impressed. They paired her up with a current student who had gone to D’s high school, for a tour. This was great because they could compare notes on h.s., as well as on potential colleges and majors. In a state that has a lot of beautiful lacs, Denison’s campus is definitely near the top. It sits on a hilly ridge. A few miles to the east is the largest complex of prehistoric earthworks (including an ancient observatory) in the US, so it is a very special area. There is a large natural area adjacent to campus.

The interview D had was the best of all her visits to any college. The interviewer (an admissions officer) was amazing. She put D at ease, asked great questions, was informative & encouraging. She made D feel great about her visit.

The facilities are generally outstanding. There are some new academic buildings, and a spectacular swimming complex. (D was impressed that the swimming pool floor apparently can be raised and lowered.) They have an arts quad at the foot of campus that is really cool (Denison also offers a BFA, a little bit unusual for an lac of its size). Dorms are okay–about in the middle for what we’ve seen at lacs. Food is very good, I believe.

Two slight disappointments. I don’t think they have a big theatre complex that would be on a par with Centre or Skidmore, for example. May be wrong about that, but we didn’t see it on our tour. Other slight drawback is the library. The bookstacks are ancient. There is a newer lobby/reading room addition, but over all it didn’t compare to brighter, more vibrant libraries that we have seen at other lacs. But this is really quibbling. Overall, facilities are outstanding.

A nice touch there–they put their admissions office right in the center of campus, down a short path from the prettiest, least obtrusive parking garage that I have seen on any lac campus. Really thoughtful planning.

D has several friends who attend currently. One is gifted in math, and is very happy there.

It’s definitely a small town atmosphere just off campus, but Columbus is very close. Great restaurants, concerts, NHL hockey, etc are all very accessible. They have a large endowment and appear to be financially very strong. It’s not at all hard to see why applications have jumped so dramatically.

Thanks @MidwestDad3. This is really helpful. Denison sounds wonderful. Depending on merit award, we will try to get in a visit next month. Good luck with that big envelope!

My D is a first-year at Denison and loves it! She arrives home tonight for spring break…GO BIG RED!!

Found out today I got accepted into Denison! Everything that I’m reading on here is great!

No envelope here today in Minnesota. Rats!

We know S is in, but wanted to see any merit offer, and the rest of the materials.

MidwestDad’s review dovetails nicely with our impressions from last fall. Gorgeous campus, nice people, smart and kind faculty–the ones we had a chance to meet and talk to.

Just received my envelope & was accepted!

Congrats all!

D received $23 K per year Founders Scholarship, very nice. COA still about $10K more per year than offers from Southern LACs.

Really pleased with the offer to fly D in for admitted students’ day. She will attend, not sure if I will go with her or not.

@4kids4colleges how do you know the COA? have you received the official financial aid stuff?

@gminor, I believe they are only seeking merit aid, so they are simply deducting the $23K Founders Scholarship from the COA.

S received envelope here this afternoon, and he also was fortunate enough to receive that same Scholarship. I think Denison is in the final two choices.

That is correct @ColdinMinny‌,we are not counting on FA because our EFC is too high. So our COA estimate is based on merit alone. Centre College, similarly ranked (#45 in USNWR LACs) has a sticker price $10k less to begin with, and D received $20k merit there.

Really happy D will get to visit Denison. Congrats @ ColdinMinny and @gminor, I hope FA works out for you.

We are in the same boat as “donut hole” parents. Merit is all there is available.

4kids, I think you will be very impressed with Denison. Gorgeous campus, nice folks. First class school.

With your numbers, you are looking at ~$7K per more Denison v. Centre, so you will need to decide if it is worth that differential.

I got my envelope yesterday! I got the founders merit scholarship award but I am waiting to here about more aid until I make my final decision. I am want to go to Denison so bad!

Hello again, is anyone going to the admitted students overnight and open house April 2-3? My D is flying in courtesy of AirDenison, by herself. First solo trip. Any others?

Any info on financial aid?

@4kids4college‌a I am doing the AirDenison fly out as well but 19th and 20th.

@gminor I received a letter about projected aid and I was pretty disappointed. I’m definitely calling their office but it didn’t come close to meeting my need. They have me a 23K merit Scholarship so I though I would be in good shape. My EFC is 0 and I’ve received very generous aid from two other great schools that met my need or matching their NPC. I was under the impression that their need based aid has been good in past years. I like Denison a lot but if it doesn’t work out I’m glad to have other options I really like as well.

Thanks God that I’m in but, in the FA package, I need to work on campus. I don’t know whether that’s good or not. Plus, the FA is really attempting.

has anyone tried asking for more money (either merit-based or need-based)?

@TP2525 I was really disappointed with my aid. It was no where close to the NPC and they gave me a nice merit scholarship. I know Denison hands out a lot of merit but I assumed getting merit plus having a 0 EFC would result in an affordable package. When I called they told me I could write an appeal letter but she let me know that they don’t meet full need. I understood this but I thought they came close. I know they supposedly enroll a lot of pell grant students but I’m not really sure how unless I just wasn’t a desirable one.
