Does anyone have any thoughts on comparing Wosster and Denison?

I have a son that very well be heading for Denison this fall (just got accepted, woo hoo!), and I also have a daughter that’s now in 10th gr. --she’s interested in visiting Wooster this summer. I can only tell you that both schools are great options. Hopefully someone can give you better insight on the Wooster page.

As for Denison, it’s now ranked as #2 in state of Ohio for private LAC’s and I believe #33 nationally. See post by Whistle Pig below. Go visit if you can!

I have a son who may be heading for Denison… Too late to edit my above response! lol!

Neither DD looked at Wooster. Sorry I can’t help.

We looked @ both, and both are fine schools. Wooster’s senior capstone project has potential to be a really good capstone experience. And it seems it is for many. Very superfical impressions of Wooster, but love the student mix. Wooster is a worn out Midwest farming town, and imo, detracts a bit. But in reality, it seems at neither place, the town thing seems to impact very little. Denison has a few more students, a bit broader geographic distribution, it seems. Frankly, Wooster struck me as a bit warmer, less preppy type place. I know some students and families there who absolutely love it. Look at the alumni giving rates of both. I’m not sure what they are. Strikes me as a bit more “masculine” campus culture. It seems FA is not grossly disparate altho DU seems to have more cash to distribute. I’m very impressed by the anecdotal observations of Wooster students and fams … they all seem to be very enthusiastic about the college. While neither is particularly sectarian, Wooster seems to be more overt in acknowledging its spiritual roots. Denison has clearly chosen to abandon its Baptist heritage as fully as possible.

We looked at both. Daughter ended up at Denison and never wants to leave the place. Very happy socially, academically and athletically. She’s a lacrosse player and joined a sorority. We received the same amount of merit money from both schools. The lacrosse and athletic facilities in general are better at Denison; the town is beautiful and easily accessed; the airport is 20 minutes away versus an hour at Wooster (if that’s an issue). It is pretty darn preppy, at least in my kid’s circle of sorority/lacrosse friends. Many from suburban New York (Westchester County and Darien and Greenwich, Ct.), but I’m sure anyone can find a niche there. Anything in particular you want to know?

I agree that both are fine schools. Several years ago it came down to Denison or OWU for DS. He did back-to-back overnights and came away with a clear preference. If you can work it in, spending a chunk of time at both schools could help with the decision. (And, honestly, I would not call either school “better”. I think your child can be very successful coming out of either. However, the student bodies are a little different and I’d let “fit” guide your child’s choice.)

My D and I took an extensive look at both Wooster and Denison. They’re both excellent schools, but have a quite different feel. The Greek scene is far more in play at Denison–at Wooster, it’s a minor footnote that the non-Greek kids pretty much ignore. Denison kids are a little more smart upper crust, Wooster kids a little more smart upward middle-class (not in actual dollars, maybe, but in the feel of the social scene). My D preferred the Wooster scene but a girl from her school she likes is blissfully happy at Denison. I think it really depends on who your child is, but they’re both delightful places.

wooster people think very highly of themselves. some professors are great but less bright students.
