How is the philosophy department at Smith college?

Small, but dedicated. The philosophy majors all seem to be very closely knit and they have their own tiny philosophy library in Dewey Hall, which is the original residence hall and very quaint and historic.

A friend of mine who went to Smith was planning to be an English major, but ended up in the philosophy department because it was less “rigid.” (In teaching philosophy? Requirements? I’m not sure, but FWIW.)

Probably in requirements. English has a lot of required courses, including a combo of Milton, Chaucer, and/or Shakespeare. And because you spend a lot of time studying heavily analyzed material with people who spent their whole lives analyzing it, there isn’t always as much room for free interpretation. Some people love it, some people find it kind of stifling. The Department is really great, but you have to be willing to fit into the program.
