So I'm a graduating senior and now I'm in the dilemma of considering whether or not to do the Departmental Honors. If I do decide to do it, it would mean I would have to be absolutely gung-ho and hardcore for the rest of my last year in college...

So what exactly are the perks of Departmental Honors? Would it be indicated on my transcript or diploma? Cords at graduation? Just pure self-pride?

Yes, you would graduate with Honors and there are quite a few different levels (highest honors, etc). However, the true perks of the honors program was so students in honors could get priority registration even as a 1st year. As of last year they changed this and now no longer offer this benefit. Therefore, I do not think it would be worth it. But, then again, if you are highly inclined in doing so more power to you.

College Honors and Dept. honors are different, although you can combine some of the coursework and do both. Pursuing departmental honors is more difficult, requires a 40-60 page thesis in your senior year, helps develop your research skills, gives you the opportunity to work 1-on-1 with a faculty advisor, is more competitive, and may help with grad school apps. College honors is just taking classes with the honors designation, basically, and if you keep up with the expected progress and get Bs or better in your honors classes, you get an honors designation on your diploma.

Oh, I didn’t say there isn’t a designation. I just forgot to mention it. I’m sure it appears somewhere on your transcript. Part of the departmental honors entails taking specific research classes. I don’t know about all majors, but the English dept. honors program requires a few different prereqs and then two courses in which you develop and write your thesis, so the thesis/honors project (depending on subject area) isn’t some outside project, it’s your coursework.

what’s your major? do you plan to go to graduate school (MA, PhD?) if so, pursuing departmental honors and the opportunity to do research would be a wonderful addition to your application.

are you talking about how good it would look on your resume to future employers? what do you want to do in terms of careers? for a lot of employers… the most important thing is work experience . . .

so you can look at pursuing departmental honors as an opportunity cost. depends on what you want to do in the future.
