Departmental scholarship letter

S received a packet yesterday from his intended major department inviting him to apply for one of their departmental scholarships, along with the application form(last thing he wants to see after filling out the other one).
Of course, in my mind, I take this to mean he was passed over by the "big" scholarship committee and tossed down to the department.
Anybody have any experience with this process,or am I just "awfullizing"?

Awfullizing.......and for a kid looking for OPM[other people's money] what is this about doesn't want to see an application? Maybe pick another school that costs less and get a job will perk up the lazy kid.

hazmat

You obviously haven't seen the Honors Program application from USC. It made scholarship/honors apps I saw two years back to Wash U and others pale by comparison.

It's not fair to categorize cathymee's son as lazy because after having all regular college applications done AND the USC Honors program app, it is somewhat difficult to get someone refocused on yet another application, especially when they thought the process was over.

Ok I am being unfair.........you called me out and I concur. The kid is entitled to complain and to have his mommie pay for him. I have grown weary of folks who look for OPM and then complain. Call me evil. I shall stay away from responding to comments made in an open forum regarding this type of issue. All I can say is Top Southern........

Kinda harsh,Hazmat..especially w/o knowing the application process at the school and circumstances.Don't really know why me and my kid have become the object of your wrath but...whatever...
This is not a kid who won't do the work, just a momentary reaction of "oh no,not another one, especially to the same institution".
EADad,thanks for the defense.I appreciate it,as apparently does my so called money grubbing kid..
And if I may,Hazmat..what exactly does "Top Southern" mean?Im really not familiar with Southern schools if its a geographical or ranking reference.South Carolina was recommended to us,major wise, thats why he applied.

P.S.Went back to reread my original post, thinking perhaps I worded it badly.Have to say,Hazmat's reaction was quite vitriolic and made many assumptions about my son's character.
He happens to have a job he's held for the past two years, values the worth of education dollars and has applied to a variety of schools with different money situations..ranging from full reward for being a NMF to full pay,no scholarship.

Sorry I offended you or your child. Good luck w/ your search for big money.

I will concur with the fact that the USC Honors Application is a real bear! Our S took one look and said "no thanks." I will even go out on a limb and say that the USC Honors application is the most difficult application out there.

So I guess that makes the money a sure bet for those who can endure. How much money are you guys lamenting about here?

The application process is not a sure bet "for those that can endure".There's an invited interview weekend. They give out 40..20 in state and 20 out of state..scholarships cover full tuition and exceed the cost of tuition by 3-6,000 approx which can be used to cover the room/board costs.
It's also is used to give out other scholarships and admission to their Honors College. It also comes with other perks.
Maybe the amount we are "lamenting"(a little cynical ?) might seem like peanuts to someone who feels they can fork over the full cost to a Hall of Ivy,or wherever they consider more presitigious, but to some it may make the difference in attending or not, and to some, like EA Dad's D,USC is her first choice school..

The South Carolina application is for honors college AND scholarship consideration...one application for both and it is a very demanding application. My daughter has filled out a bunch of scholarship aps and so did my son. This one beat them all. She persisted, and completed the task. I can't imagine what any department at USC would want that couldn't be gleaned from the honors college/scholarship application. It had numerous short essays and one long one (on topics that I honestly didn't understand as a well educated adult). My daughter did a ton of research into the topic she wrote her 1000 word essay about...and NO it is not automatic. She will not be considered for scholarship OR honors college there because her SAT score fell 20 points below their "usual minimum SAT score". I'm not sure if this ap is still posted online, but if it is, I would urge anyone who wishes to comment about it to read it first.

thumper
The dept scholarship application wasnt very demanding..the usual stuff plus a why (the major) type essay.Seems to me its all stuff (besides that why? essay) they couldve gotten from the other app and/or the admissions app for kids who didnt do the Honors app but ..whatever...S will do it this weekend..it has to be back there by Feb 15.
I better not complain or Hazmat will be nipping at my heels again!!
