Today I got in the mail a scholarship from Lyle, and the letter said it is "$9,000 per semester, $36,000 over four years." If it is 9k per semester, then shouldn't it be 72k over four years? In another part of the letter it says "your award will be available for eight consecutive fall and spring semesters," so that also makes it sound like it would be 9k for each semester. Has anyone else gotten a departmental scholarship that says this?

Dang, that’s a little embarrassing for an Engineering School. I would wager they mean $9,000 per year, but I hope for your sake it is in fact $9000 per semester.

Okay, I emailed my department director, and he said that it was supposed to say $4,500 per semester and $36,000 for four years. But yeah, that is somewhat of an embarrassing mistake :P

Sorry it wasn’t the higher value, but, hey, that’s still a really great award. Congratulations!

I got an email from Lyle School of engineering yesterday correcting that mistake. I haven’t gotten my letter in the mail yet, but the email said I won a similar scholarship and was correcting the wording from “per semester” to “per year.” Hope this helps.

Has anyone heard from Cox School of Business re: department scholarships?

My son just received $7500.00 annual scholarship from the Cox School of Business. This is in addition to receiving the Founders’ Scholarship from the university itself. We are very pleased!

Congrats, srpsooner! My son also received a similar letter today - $7,500/year, but didn’t do quite as well on the university scholarship (Provost vs. Founders). We’re still very pleased and proud! Do you know if this is it, or if there may be more scholarships coming? Did your son apply to the Honors Program? Mine was accepted, so we are hoping for a scholarship from the Honors Program as well.

Congratulations to y’all! Do you mind sharing where you are located? We are from the east coast and my D is hoping to receive a Cox scholarship also.

Thank you and congrats again!!!

We are from Texas (Houston)

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

I received an invitation to apply to the dedman college scholars program. anybody else?

Thank you, received letter from Cox today offering my D $7,500 p/year. It is very nice to see that our children’s hard work in high school is being generously recognized at SMU. Best of luck to everyone!

Congrats, atlantaerd! I was hoping you would receive yours was just taking an extra day or two to get to atlanta (assuming that’s where you’re from).

Do you think your D will end up at SMU? Where else is she considering?

Thank you kjb! Iactually woke up sick today but had my Mom keep an eye out for the mail man. When I saw Cox on the envelope I texted my daughter at school for permission to take a peek inside; she didn’t respond for 2 looong hrs!

Her great grandmother is a UVA grad so it was always in the cards that she would apply. She has been accepted to the only 4 schools she applied to: UT McCombs, University of GA Honors, SMU and UVA. With less then 120 students in her grade, it’s a big deal to have two receive EA acceptances to UVA which made it difficult for her to say her heart belongs to SMU. My husband and I offered to fly her up for Admitted Students Day at UVA just to make double sure but she declined.

UVA and UC Berkely are the top 2 state universities in the country, but the hotest e
conomies in the country happen to be in Texas (Houston & Dallas) which will only benefit SMU. Cox is going no where but UP as well as SMU with a second year of highly qualified applicants. I am thrilled to see her so happy with her choice.

Has your S decided on a school yet? Good luck during this time!
Pony Up from Atlanta, GA!

Wow! What an impressive list of acceptances! Isn’t your heart just bursting with pride?

My son has been accepted to SMU, Texas A&M (big brother is in engineering there), Tulane, and Southwestern Univ (Georgetown, TX). Still waiting to hear from Duke and UT McCombs (although we did hear from them re: an interview, now scheduled for 1/25).

Just curious - how did SMU appear on your radar? Of course, living in Texas, we know a lot of kiddos who have attended and know of its excellent reputation. I took my son to a Cox “Academic Spotlight” in October and he fell in love with it!

What are your thoughts re: Cox vs. McCombs? Hope you’re feeling better, by the way!

Thank you, still stuffy but at least the sinus headache is gone. Too funny, we were also at the Cox Spotlight in October! Congrats to your son also on an equally impressive list of great choices. UTAustin and Rice were the only TX schools in our radar last year. My D had already visited Rice a couple of times and it was her first choice until she spent a day sitting in 3 classes. My husband had even purchased an owl necklace for her Christmas of 2010! She came away feeling like the atmosphere in the school was somewhat tense and not very warm. Good to know as we crossed it off our list and headed for Austin this past summer. We spent 4 days in Austin and she loved the Italian architecture of several of the buildings and could see herself there. UT became a front runner and Vanderbilt was crossed off the list. Since we still had our rental car for 3 more days, we decided to head towards Dallas and make a quick stop at Baylor and TCU. The latter two didn’t make the short list because close proximity to a metropolitan city is a must for her.

I only knew of SMU because a friend is an alumni and another friend’s daughter from Atlanta is a junior there. Since we were in Dallas my D called SMU and asked to join a tour the following day. Long story short, we stayed 3 days in Dallas because she wanted to go back a second time for the Cox tour and a third 1/2 day for just walking the campus. The main difference between SMU and the rest of the schools is that she felt like the administration took an interest in her and she liked the warm, almost family-like atmosphere at the school. Keep in mind that she is graduating from a Christian school of only 1,200 students in K - 12th. SMU is bigger then Davidson and Wake but not as large as UVA or UTAustin; it’s a mid-size school which appealed to her. My husband and I are confident that she will receive a great education at SMU and she will have the support to help her succeed.

McCombs became her second choice ahead of the University of GA simply because it is a top 10 business school; way ahead of UGA. Although she loves GA and has many friends going this fall. If your son is interested in Computer Science I would say go to UT, if not, Cox with its connections in the Dallas business community is a better choice. But most importantly, the Cox administration and teachers are very committed to seeing the students succeed and they help those who take the initiative to ask for an internship, summer programs, etc. SMU also has a strong alumni network which we have witnesed first hand in Atlanta. I also believe that there are many more opportunities at SMU to develop important contacts early on. Something that we have shared with our D is that Dallas is ranked 36 and Houston 13 out of the worlds top 200 metropolitan economies; only US cities with a top ranking. Given the economic climate in our country, I think TX is a great place to be.

I didn’t mean to write so much, but good luck to you and your S and if he decides to commit to SMU, I look forward to meeting y’all on the Hilltop. Pony up!

Hey, no apologies necessary! I love reading other folks’ stories! It sounds like we have so much in common - my S also attends a small Christian school (106 in his class!) Best wishes to you - will let you know where the Lord leads… and you’re right, we may be meeting on the Hilltop! Best wishes to you and your family.

Best wishes to you all as well! God is ultimately in charge so your son is in good hands!
Please PM me and let me know how it all turns out. I do hope that your S chooses SMU in end! We can look forward to Boulevarding and a strong Class of 2016 parents cheering section at Ford stadium on game day. :)

Congrats to everyone for their success!
I was just wondering, does anyone know if Dedman College has sent out their departmental scholarships yet?
