I took Alg II/Trig last year, and this year I skipped Precalc so I'm taking AP Calc AB. We spent ~3 weeks going over some prerequisites for Calculus, which included things from both Alg II/Trig and Precalc. So obviously I didn't learn everything in Precalc in that 3 weeks (I felt like most of what we went over was just a more advanced version of Alg II/Trig).

I'm around half way done with Barron's and I understand most things (and I've asked my mom about things I didn't understand; she's Chinese so she knows math lol.) Will that be enough for the Math IIC test? Should I get PR? Or should I ask the precalc teacher to tutor me?

I'm a junior, so I don't have to worry about taking the test soon. But I definitely need to take this test to apply for BS/MD programs.

Thank you for replying!

(I think I asked a similar question before, but I wasn't expecting to do so little review of Precalc.)

edit: Oh, and Barron's is supposedly overkill, right? What are the things that Barron's goes over that aren't necessary for the IIC test?

I think Barron’s is overkill just because of how difficult the questions are, but I believe it covers everything it is supposed to.

If you’ve gone through the entire Barron’s review section and understand everything, you should be fine. However, it certainly doesn’t hurt to get some tutoring from a Pre-Calc teacher if you need some more help with it.

I agree, Barrons is overkill. I consistently scored between 650 and 680 on Barrons practice tests and then got a 790 on the Sparknotes free practice test and a 790 on the real thing.

Yeah from what I understand, a 700 on a Barron’s test = 800 on the actual thing - but the review is awesome, though it is overkill [has some things that won’t show up on the actual test]. Unfortunately, there’s material in the Math II that I haven’t covered so I’m relying on the Barron’s to help me through that (they’re always strongest in math) - I’m also wondering which parts of the review section are unnecessary to go over, if anyone can help in that department.

The officials are better…I used a combination of Barron’s and Princeton…I looked at the Sparknotes book at the bookstore and found a mistake in it in the five seconds I was looking…

My main concern (right now at least) is learning the material (because I skipped precalculus), not the accuracy of the practice tests. Sorry if I wasn’t too clear about that. I have the official practice tests that I will go over when I feel comfortable with the material. So it seems like Barron’s by itself is okay?

barrons is really good for reviewing the material although I wouldn’t say the practice tests are too helpful. I’d say use the Barrons to review as much of the material as you can, and before you use the PTs, use all the ones up on sparknotes.com (they give an instant breakdown) and the official ones, and maybe even PR

^Agreed. The practice tests are pretty discouraging. If you score well on the diagnostic test (600+) then I suppose you could use them, but they weren’t really helping me. I’m currently using the McGraw Hill tests and then am going back to Barron’s when I finish.

haha i also skipped precalc and i’m now a junior in AP Calc AB.

i’m taking the math IIC this saturday…in two days!!

i used the barrons book to review and i think it really helped me learn some of the things from precalc. yes the barrons tests are hard, but i took two of the official collegeboard tests and i did pretty well.

i hope depending completely on barrons will work out! :]
