Deposit Recommendations

So my D has been accepted, however, IU is not her number 1 or 2 pick (she hasn't heard from them yet).
Should I still send in the deposit?

Well, that depends upon your financial situation.

The deposit is not due until May 1st. The advantage in sending it in early, however, is that it allows you first choice in housing. My understanding is that, if you daughter does attend elsewhere, you will get the deposit back--but I doubt anyone on this site can confirm that (since all our sons and daughters are the ones who decided to attend IU-B).

You should probably check with the school to see if they will refund the deposit--and if so, send it in early.

It is my understanding that the deposit is $300, of which $200 can be refunded if the student decides not to matriculate and submits a written request for the refund by IU's deadline for the refund (not sure what that date is off the toip of my head).

Thanks!
I'm leaning toward sending the deposit in early.
She just received the packet today and seemed pretty excited about it.
IU is my husband's and I first choice for her, but it is her decision in the end.

My daughter also got her first choice in housing and did not send the deposit in until March. However, she did not choose an incredibly popular dorm neighborhood and she also requested a quiet floor.

Thanks for that info--good to know.
Can you recommend a good "neighborhood?"
We decided not to attend the dorm tour when we visited campus. We were on a tight schedule and didn't have the time.

The choice of a neighborhood will depend upon your definition of "good." If you search this forum for housing and dorms there are several discussions of the neighborhoods that are pretty insightful.

Having done the dorm tour, you really didn't miss much. A dorm in one place is much like a dorm in any other--just my opinion though. I guess I'm getting at the fact that no matter what dorm they choose, dormlife will be a BIG adjustment for many used to more spacious accommodations.
