Desktop vs. Laptop

Which is better in general? Which is better for gaming?

When it comes to performance, laptops have pretty much caught up with desktops. Nowadays, you can get good laptops that are built for gaming. At the same time, you'll have a product that takes up less space on your desk, and can still be portable when you need it to be. Seeing that you're concerned about being able to play your games, the only mainstream manufacturer's model that would be appropriate for you is the Dell XPS laptop, it is specifically built for gamers.

There are some laptop manufacturers that are dedicated to building high-quality laptops for gamers. Alienware, Sager, Asus all come into my mind, and there are many others. I'm sure some other CC-ers can post their suggestions as well.

This topic has been beaten to death on this forum. You should be able to find all kinds of crazy information.

He is somewhat wrong that laptops have caught up.

For gaming, a desktop is going to be the only way to get full performance (unless you want to spend $3000 on a laptop that preforms decently and cant be upgraded). The desktop component are always available with higher clock speeds and they are easily upgradeable. After a couple of years go by, you can just go buy a new graphics card and be able to handle new games without upgrading the whole system at once (which would cost less than a laptop anywyas).

I could probobly build you 2 gaming systems for about the same price as a laptop that can manage the same preformance (or less)

Well, I do agree with everything Otto said. When I made my earlier post, I didn't take price into consideration.

Gaming desktop hands down, it would be cheaper and better for games.

Laptops, by their very nature, not made for gamaing. If you are taking a computer with you to college, make sure it is a laptop. There are a host of reasons. If you want to game, just get a PS2, PSP, XBox, etc. Gaming capabilities are a bad reason to opt for a desktop instead of a laptop. Unless you are a nerd, in which case it is acceptable.

Most of the best games are on PC. Whats the best specs for gaming?

The one thing I want to stress for people buying laptops is buy a MOBILE laptop not a DESKTOP in a laptop case. Too many times you see people buy wildly powerful laptops that weigh too much too move, run out of battery after an hour, and overheat like crazy. It defeats the purpose of a laptop.

TomK is right. Definately go with the Intel Pentium M Centrino Mobile Technology.

or go with a nice sized laptop (buy one used or from a lease return...thats what I did and got a nice Thinkpad for 550) and then bring that along with your desktop. Now THAT is where its at.
