Can laptops handle New computer games(i.e. Doom 3 et., not solitaire!) in the same fashion as desktops? Thanks.

It depends on your laptop.

i knew someone was going to give that answer, in general can as i said laptops handle what desktops can?

They will if they've got a decent graphics card, and not the crappy Intel Extreme graphics that most lower-end laptops have.

As a general rule, pc games run better on a desktop than on a laptop. You can build a desktop machine with the newest motherboards that support DDR2 memory and have the latest PCI Express graphic card slot. All this for a lot less money than a game ready laptop.

That said, there are laptops that can play pc games well (the Dell XP series, Alienware, Voodoo and others). The downside is that these machines are more expensive than a comparable desktop. They are also heavy and generally have poor battery life. If your gaming laptop is set up for max video settings, you will be plugged into an electrical outlet.

So what's the point?

Does a gaming laptop ever make any sense? Do you meet the following conditions:

money is not an issue.

you're not planning on moving your laptop outside of your dorm room.

you need the relative ease of carrying your laptop to school at the start of the year and back home during breaks or vacations...

There are laptops designed for gaming. They might give you a little better experience than the average notepad. Also, gaming laptops tend to have a problem with heating; they get hot faster than your desktop. SO if you want a really good gaming laptop, you have to be able to spend towards $3,000 if not more.

You guys, i am just speaking in general. I am a console video gamer, i don't really play pc games, but now that i have my laptop i thought i may buy a game for it. I do not know much at all about pc games, so just in GENERAL can a DECENT laptop handle pc games. I have a brand new dell latitude.

What are the specs for your laptop?

If you want to run a pc game, the game box will have the minimum and recommended pc specs. If your laptop meets those specs, you're good to go.
