Desperate for help - lack of experience

Dear all,

I would really appreciate some advice. I am 27, B.A in geography from G.W.U (DC) 2003, GPA 3.72. I am in a terrible predicament due to my lack of work experience and my desire to enter the business world and make something of myself. I have only about a year (including an internship and part time) of work experience due to problems that have prevented me from a proper continuous employment (now resolved). The work experience consisted mostly of administrative work and personel recruiting for the small business I was working for.

My interests are not yet concrete, however the idea of an MBA in a concentration such as Real-Estate, Aviation/Airlines, Media or Marketing is on my mind. Unfortunately, I'm totaly lost because I have no idea how to get the correct work experience in order to apply for an MBA.

Do I have a chance at going for a decent MBA at a good school in the future if I could get some good experience? Or should I go now for an M.S degree focused on one of those specific industry of my preference. Do you think the M.S degree would be inferior/equal to an MBA and would it be a more practical choice in my situation?

Could you suggest some ways, given my limited experience, where I could get a position of employment that would be MBA worthy? I assume looking at getting a position in one the management consultancies is out of the question given my history, yes? Otherwise, how about real estate firms or airlines?

I've searched the job postings online, but most require over 1 year of industry experience, which is a real catch 22 for me.. Also, I'm not sure if I have the background or the skills the enter any of the industries I am interested in. Any tips on what areas or types of positions to look for given my employment gaps?

Thanks
Seeker.

There isnt any "correct" work experience for MBA programs. Programs get a lot of IB/Finance/Marketing applications because in those industries it's become the standard to work for 3-5 and then go get an MBA. However, programs really value any sort of steady work experience that shows your leadership skills. I would go even venture to say you might be at an advantage with any sort of unique or off-beat experience. Basically what you need to do now is to get a job and work for 2 years while increasing your management experience. You can always switch careers after an MBA program.

If you're interested in real estate, how about getting your real estate license and working for a while?
