Desperate Student seeking advice from anyone

Hi I have recently been accepted to Duke University/Dartmouth/and NYU Stern Scholars program. I eventually will prob. go into the business field. I am tearing myself apart trying to make a decision and was wondering where I could get good, reliable, non-biased advice, and I have found myself here on the Parents Forum. What I am tryin to take into consideration is overall college experiece, academics, and great connections with internship and job opportunites in the financial world. I have basically narroweed it down to duke and nyu stern because Dartmouth did not give me much financial aid. Now I am just deciding between a school with an amazing campus, great prestige, great academics and a school that has a great business program, is already in the heart of the financial world, and great training for the financial sector. If anyone could give me advice please let me know.

My advice, no offense, would be to not call yourself desperate. Thousands of students would give anything to be choosing between the opportunities you have before you.

I can't speak to the financial career aspects of your three options, but I do know that subject has been debated before on this site. You might be able to find the thread by putting "Ibanking" or something similar into the search function. Or you could always Google "best IBanking schools" or whatever. I do remember some presumably knowledgable people mentioning that only certain schools are considered for recruitment into the IBanking world. I don't know whether the three on your list are among them.

Good luck, and count your blessings.

As jmmom said to a previous poster, parents try to tailor their advice to "fit" the student. To that end, it is very helpful if not necessary to know more about you. One obvious question would be what sort of "college experience" are you seeking?

Sorry about that dizzy mom. I didn't mean to use the word "desperate" in that way. I was merely saying desperate bc i have a couple of days left to decide. I am completely aware of the good fortunes I have and remember how fortunate I am for even havin the opportunity to be able to make a decision like this. Anyways tahnx for the tip

NYStudent - Have you visited both? If Dartmouth didn't give you much financial aid ... it's hard for me to believe that NYU did!
We recently visited Stern on University Days - PM me if you have any specific questions that we might be able to help you with.

Is your FA from Duke merit or need? IF based on need, I would definitely ask Dartmouth (if it is your first choice) for a financial review, giving faxing over the better of the packages between Duke (if the money is merit, they will not review merit money against need based money). Fax it over to them in the morning, then follow up with a phone call, since monday is may 1, they'll get back to you.

I know remaining a stern scholarship is contigent on keeping a 3.5 gpa which could be onerous for some (if you have a bad term, a couple of B's could knock you out of the box and then all is lost).

i have visited duke and nyu and i must say duke's campus was amazing. Im not saying that being in the city is not attractive, just that i might find the "campus" feel a lil more fun. Yes although nyu doesnt give much financial need, w.e they gave, combined wit the scholarship is lower than dartmouth. I sent in a letter to dartmouth a week ago about the financial aid situation, still have not gotten a response.

call them...

okay- weather, clothes, sports oriented, greek life

do you want big city, or small town

how close to family do you want to be

internships are more available in NY

what kind of flexibility do you want in your choice of major

what kind of student body are you looking for

I ask these because My D wants an urban school...that is her biggest criteria, a great program in the country, or a small city would not be a match for her

So, you may go the other direction, but look at those questiosn

I just read the cover story article in Business Week on the top 50 undergraduate B schools. NYU is 7th, but the article says the competition is fierce. Keeping a 3.5 might be difficult. I keep re-looking at the list, but I do not see either Duke or Dartmouth listed in the top 50.

Dartmouth does not have an undergrad business school. Tuck is their grad school of business. It functions more like an LAC.

However they are not at a loss for putting students on wall street.

NYStudent - Three great places, three very different environments. I presume you've visited all three. What does your heart tell you?

I have gotten rid of dartmouth. Its too expensive for my parents to afford.

citygirlsmom- ive been askin these questiosn to myself, but unfortunately i am still torn. The weather, sports oriented and greek life at DUke are all things I found attractive. In terms of big city or small town, it doenst make a difference to me bc i loved Dukes campus and prob. wouldnt want to leave it, but I also like new york city and wouldnt have any trouble finding things to do. Being close to family could be an advantage but its not a major factor in my mind. Internships- is a big advantage of NYU's, its location in the city provides alot of opportunities for its students. Duke has a name and I was wondering if they get many internships also? Flexibility doesn't matter, I think I eventually will go into business and have decided either econ at Duke or business at NYU. I liked the student body at both colleges.

New Hope- I am really confused right now. I know i eventually will end up doing business. for that, NYU is great. But I also loved Duke's environment, and all the activiites on campus that I would miss out at NYU. NYU has the city, internships, job placements, and undergraduate business program. Duke has the prestige, great college campus, good academics. Its a tough decision. I have family tellin me to go to NYU STern bc they have come out from there. But they didn't have a choice like I did to choose between a school like Duke or Dartmouth with the Stern school.

You will have other opportunities to get into business, but only one chance to experience undergraduate life at a place like Duke.

thats one thing that keeps me thinkin bout Duke. I will not have that kind of undergrad life at a place liek duke.

Duke is indeed beautiful, with the big tower and all. Personally, I enjoyed a college campus, and later chose a grad school in a wondeful city. Go with your heart; imagine yourself unpacking and strolling a campus for 4 years....

Sounds like Duke then. :)

Any interest in ACC hoops?

BIG duke fan. Duke isnt set in stone yet tho. I am still debating with NYU as family pressure, scholarship, and internship opportnuitieis are makin me 2nd guess.

I understand, I did not mean to prejudge.

Scholarship: obviously, you have to give serious consideration to finances. I did not see you compare Duke versus NYU from a financial perspective.

Internships: are nice, but IMO secondary at this time in your life. IMO, students should concentrate first and foremost on education and personal/social growth. You will have time to learn all about the business world.

Family pressure: It's your life. Here is a thread about someone who wants to go to MIT but her Dad says Stanford. I think pretty much all of the posters favored MIT:
