I am applying to the early action deadline for prospective freshmen at Temple University and am also applying to the art program within this school which is Tyler School of Art.

The early action deadline for Temple is November 1st, but for the Tyler School of Art, it doesn't say I'd necessarily have to get all the materials (like self-portrait, portfolio) in by that date. It says that November 1st is the deadline for the Spring semester for freshmen and also transfer students, but no where does it say Fall semester freshmen need to get it in by then. So what is the deadline?!?!

The website also doesn't specify if the portrait (which needs to be mailed in) needs to ARRIVE by a certain deadline (in my case I guess November 1st but I'm still not even sure about that) or that it needs to be POSTMARKED by that deadline. Again, for transfer and Spring applicants, it says the portrait needs to arrive by November 1st. I'm just so confused. Normally things that are mailed are given a deadline to be postmarked because mail is weird and can screw up which is not the applicant's fault. Would it be safe to assume that this is the case?

i don’t know but I sent a message to a family who has a kid at Tyler so hopefully they can jump in. I suggest you call Tyler directly as well and ask about deadlines… Good luck!

My daughter is a junior Graphic Design major at Tyler. When she applied to Temple, you had to get accepted to both the university & Tyler separately, She applied online like all other applicants to the university & then did an in person portfolio review. This can be scheduled to do at Tyler, but my daughter did her’s at a local National Portfolio Day. They may allow a digital upload of portfolios now, but I’m not sure. I’m pretty sure you don’t mail them any part of your portfolio.

Since this was 3 years ago, I’m not sure the process is exactly the same, they didn’t have Early Action then, so I recommend you check out Tyler’s website:

Feel free to call the Tyler admissions office directly, I’m sure they will answer any specific questions you have about the application process.

My son is a freshman @ Tyler but he did not apply for early action. I second the idea that you call the admission office @ Tyler. You do need to be accepted at the university along with acceptance at Tyler. If I remember correctly he did submit his entire portfolio, including the self-portrait, online - probably via Slideroom but you would need to confirm with the admissions office about that too. I don’t remember an early action deadline for portfolios. My son applied to 5 other schools and I only remember one (not Tyler) that had a portfolio deadline that was particularly early. The admissions staff @ Tyler are very helpful.
