Desperately seeking advice regarding a transfer

Hey everyone!
So to cut a long story short, my entry into college has not been very successful. My family changed my plans, and I started at a state university two weeks late, and right after a relative of mine (who I'm close with and am currently living with) was diagnosed with a terminal condition. My family took up a lot of my time this semester, and while I did well in two of the three classes my college allowed me to register for, I failed one of them.
However, I have been miserable in school since I arrived here, and am looking to transfer out for both academic and personal reasons. I've been talking with a private school, and I had a good feeling up until the end of this semester.
I have always had good grades (I received a year of English and US History from AP exams, and I speak another language). I am also taking five classes next semester, including my second 200-level class.
I'm wondering if this will effect my ability to transfer, even if I do extremely well next semester. I would really like to avoid coming back here for another semester or even year.
Does anybody have any advice?

College courses and grades will be the most important factor in transfer admissions, although if you are trying to transfer for sophomore year, high school courses, grades, and SAT/ACT scores will typically be given significant consideration, since you will not have that much of a college record to use.

If your college record makes you unable to transfer to another four year school for sophomore year, and you do not want to continue at your current school, you may want to consider doing your sophomore year at a community college, where you can take transferable courses and do your best to do well in them to build up a better transfer application for junior level transfer. Of course, you will have to take courses that prepare you to declare a major as soon as you transfer as a junior.

Thank you for your advice!
I’m taking a bunch of classes, and if I manage to get an “A” in all of them, I can have a very good GPA (higher than a 3.0). Would you mind answering one more question?
The schools I’m looking at are accepting transfer applications until July first. My transcripts for the whole year, this semester’s grades included, will be available to see on my transcript. Do you think I should wait until May to submit everything? Or would this jeopardize my chances?
Thank you again!!

Check each school for deadlines. Schools with rolling admissions may become more difficult to get into close to the deadline, as the school (or your major at the school) fills up.
