Detailed curriculum

Does anyone have info on BW’s BM MT curriculum? The website mentions classes, but I was hoping to see a more detailed semester by semester listing. Thanks!

This page lists the course requirements for all music degrees - Music Theatre is about 1/3 way down the page. While it doesn't list them semester by semester, you can pretty much figure that out by the course numbers.

B-W: Music Program Requirements

Wow, thank-you so much...I had not seen this and it's exactly what I was looking for.

Mnay schools have it - just a matter of typing the right words into their search engines :) Sometimes it's easier to find than others.

Hmmm, I have to admit, I was surprised by the lack of acting classes. Am I reading this correctly that there is only one acting class (3 credit hours) required??? Maybe a current student can comment. Thanks!

I noticed that too but perhaps this is because it is a BM degree program and not a BFA. BMs tend to have a significant component in music and are not as equally balanced between acting, singing, and dancing as a BFA, generally speaking. This BM program is in a music conservatory and not a theater or drama department and this is something to examine at all schools, in fact, as there are differences in the degree programs, curricula, and host departments.

One note is that while it lists only one acting class, it also lists a required class called "Building a Character." A BFA program tends to have many more acting classes, scene study, voice/speech, monologues, dialects, etc.

The Musical Theatre Workshop classes are the main Acting classes that are taken at BW. Topics differ each semester, sometimes focusing on monologues or sometimes focusing on audition technique. Building a character is an acting class that is taken through the theatre department. Voice/speech is offered through the theatre department but is not a required class for MTs. I hope this has cleared up some confusion.

Thanks so much for your answers BWMT09, I was hoping you'd respond.

Soozivet, my D really seems to want the BM degree, even though I might prefer the BFA (but its not my degree or my life, is it :)). And there are some BM programs that despite the heavy music emphasis, that DO appear to equally emphasize voice, acting and dance (OCU, UMiami (Frost) for example).

My D likes that there is a Jazz emphasis that can be added to any BM degree at Baldwin-Wallace. BWMT09, do you know of anyone that has done this?

TXKatsmom.....a BM is certainly every bit as good as a BFA. I hopefully was only contrasting the differences in curriculum that exist between some of these MT programs and finding the right fit for what you want is where it is at. One of my students is heading to Baldwin-Wallace this fall and I couldn't be happier for her!

TXKatsmom, the Jazz emphasis is focused on instrumentalists. I don't know any current vocal majors (MT or Opera) who do emphasize in vocal Jazz. One student I knew freshmen year who intended to emphasize in that ended up leaving by the end of the year because there were no opportunities for him. Any vocal Jazz that your D may learn would take place in her MT courses. 2nd semester sophomore year we focused on some vocal jazz in our solfege corse, but not a significant amount.

Thanks for the info BWMT09!
