Did a College Ask You to Switch Your Early Action Application to Early Decision?

It does seem that a growing number of colleges are approaching EA or RD students to suggest a switch to ED instead. I don’t like this gambit because it makes families second-guess decisions that were probably made for good reasons and it certainly adds stress to an already-stressful process. If the encouragement to switch to ED arrives via a generic one-time email, that’s not as bad as personal calls to the student or guidance counselor, but I still feel that it’s inappropriate unless the college provides some compelling reasons for making the switch.

I can’t tell yet, however, if there are a lot of students who are pressured into switching to ED via personal contact and then denied anyway, which was my initial concern. As I said in my first post, I’ve certainly heard tales of this happening, but it’s hard to tell yet if it’s happening OFTEN. I certainly hope not!

My D was deferred from Tulane EA then received 3 personal emails encouraging her to switch to ED2. Her stats are high enough to get into Tulane but not much demonstrated interest. She declined ED2 because Tulane isn’t her first choice. She applied EA to U of Miami, and they also sent her an email encouraging her to switch to ED2 - before the EA decision was even available. This email was more of a generic mailer than Tulane’s, as it just reminded that ED2 was an option and the deadline; but, I thought it was strange they would encourage her to switch to ED2 before she knew about her EA application (she got in EA with a Presidential scholarship). She applied EA to 6 schools and those 2 are the only ones who did this.
