Did any MCS acceptees get this? (HSS+MCS joint program)

Because of your outstanding qualifications, we would like to invite you to participate in a joint program between the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Mellon College of Science. This program was created for students interested in combining the breadth of the liberal arts with the technical foundations of the sciences. More information about this program is enclosed. If you are interested in participating in the program, please detach, complete and return the form on the bottom of the information sheet along with the enrollment reply slip and your $800 deposit.

Was looking online at my WAIITP admissions letter and this was at the end of it. Anyone have more information on it? Thanks!

yea I got the invite

im assuming its this [SHS - Science and Humanities Scholars Program](CMU - Science and Humanities Scholars Program - Carnegie Mellon University)

i got it too! but i still haven’t received my package in the mail…

I got it too  Even though I read the info and website, I still don’t really understand all of it. I guess the benefits would be housing with other SHS students and being able to take more diverse classes. I applied for chemistry at MCS but am thinking about also doing statistics from HSS. I think that in the long run this could be beneficial in helping me stand out from other graduate/professional school applicants.

If you’ve got questions about SHS, ask away. I didn’t know anything about it when I got the letter, either. (I applied to H&SS.)

Basically, it’s more of a framework than a program - it lets you more easily take classes from both colleges or major in something from each of them (if you want). You meet an interesting bunch of people your freshman year if you live in the housing cluster. It’s an interdisciplinary program, so you’ll get exposed to a little of both schools, and it might help you realize you’re interested in something from both schools.

In any case, it can’t hurt :)

If you do a major in each school, how many credits would you take each semester?

I wasn’t offered to participate in this program. :frowning: I think it was because I also applied to the Carnegie Institute of Technology and was waitlisted. Could I possibly request to participate in this program and refuse the spot on the waitlist with CIT? Who should I call for this information? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!! :)

I applied to MCS and H&SS, with MCS as #1 choice in the supplement. I was accepted to both MCS and H&SS, and also offered to take part in the SHS program. I mentioned my interest in the program in my supplement essay since I’m pretty much undecided and fairly well rounded (listed “General MCS” and “General H&SS” as majors for each college). From what I can gather it lets you have a more diverse learning experience at CMU and clusters you with other students of the same program.

Also, this is more directed at VBlast2, since he/she seems to attend CMU currently:

Do you know anything about the Quantitative Social Sciences Scholars Program (QSSS)? I was also invited to join this program in addition to SHS, and they both seem to be interdisciplinary, so I’m not sure which one to pick if I attend CMU.

I don’t know anything about QSSS besides what I already posted in [your thread](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/carnegie-mellon-university/1119664-shs-qsss.html#post12353914)… :P

It’s a new program. Also check the other thread I linked to in it.

For the millionth time: No one knows anything about QSSS because there aren’t any QSSS students yet. Even the advisor for QSSS probably doesn’t know anything because he has no students to advise. :stuck_out_tongue: If you join the program, you will be the guinea pigs.

Actually, I am a current student at CMU who is in the QSSS program. The incoming class of 2010 was the first class, so you guys will not be the guinea pigs.

Also, here’s the new website that does not turn up on google search for some reason:[Quantitative Social Science Scholars Program - Carnegie Mellon University](QSSS - Quantitative Social Science Scholars Program - Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences - Carnegie Mellon University)

I really enjoy the program. We get to take cool courses, like the intro to game theory course, and we get to meet famous people, such as one of the co-winners of the 2010 Nobel prize in economics. The curriculum is easy to integrate with your primary major, so it’s easy to get an additional major in another college. For example, I am a Decision Science/ Computer Science double major, and one of my friends is considering a Econ/Chemistry double major. If you got accepted into the program, I highly recommend you accept the invitation.

^
Tensha? (sp?)

@Getsuga: where are you housed right now? The site says that QSSS is in Mudge, but none of the RAs have mentioned having any of the honors programs on their floor.

I live in the Boss House. I didn’t do the group living, but a lot of my friends did it, and they enjoy the community experience. Mudge houses both the Quantitative Social Science Scholars students and the Humanities Scholars Students. It’s a really nice dorm since it used to be a mansion.

Tenshou* But I guess I was wrong…

Lol BlizzBlazer,

I know what you are referring to, but the name was not supposed to be a reference to Ichigo’s attack.

Anyways, if any of you are interested in the QSSS program and are coming to sleeping bag weekend, I suggest you meet with Professor Golman.

… Do you know what floor(s)? I’m pretty sure HSP is in Boss House still, at least, but I could be wrong. SHS is in Stever to my knowledge. And I’ve lived in Mudge for two years. :)
