Was anyone who got accepted invited to the science of humanities scholars program? I was wondering what this program was because they invited me to enroll in it.

I got invited to join as well but really have no idea what it is… anyone with any insight??

Pick a MCS major, pick a humanities major, and complete a BA in both while not having to take all the required classes of either major. For example, you could do Chemistry and Creative Writing. :)

is there a big advantage to the program?

It’s a way to kind of “compress” two majors if you’re looking to pick up a minor. For example, I’m trying to get into the BHA program for Fine Arts/Creative Writing, because I’m planning to take another major in Human-Computer Interaction and I’m afraid I won’t get all my credits worked out if I can’t compress those two majors. (BHA is the exact same as SHS, but for CFA/HSS instead of MCS/HSS.)

Oh, you also get to live in Boss if you want, which is where all the smart kids go to soak up each others’ smartness.

I was also invited to SHS, it looks like a cool program. However, I was admitted to HSS but waitlisted at MCS. Is it possible to be in SHS without actually being in MCS?

I’d love any other thoughts on the program!

I have read all the information about SHS, both from the letter and from the website. Do you end up with a BA if your major is in HSS and a BS if in MCS? It is a little confusing.

@klad: I… have never heard of someone being in SHS but not accepted to MCS. that’s weird. One of the fundamental rules for the cross-department degrees is that you MUST be accepted to BOTH colleges before pursuing a dual degree. So… maybe they’re saying that you are accepted to MCS, but only if you do SHS? I’m not sure, haha. :)

@arjgn: From what I have been told about the BHA and BHSA program, you get to pick which one you want. For example, if I were getting a BA in spanish and a BS in chem, I could either get a “Bachelors of Science in Chemistry and Spanish” or a “Bachelors of Arts in Spanish and Chemistry”. But to confirm you’d have to ask someone who runs the program, since… they’re kind of their own little cult and they change how they do things often.

Interesting…thanks kate for the info. D was accepted and applied to only MCS. If it is indeed a dual degree program, then it is a very interesting option…

Uhh…I don’t really think it’s a double major program. It’s just for humanities majors who are interested in science. Or science students interested in humanities. And you live in Stever. You can still double major if you’re not in SHS. Best way to find out more is to talk to the SHS director.

It’s not a double major, it’s an integrated degree. You get one SHS degree, not two. You will complete 14 courses in the humanities, 15 in the sciences, and 14 in the ‘integrated’ area. [SHS - Curriculum](http://www.cmu.edu/shs/curr.html)

I was accepted, as well. It’s apparently pretty prestigious - only 20 kids were invited or something like that? I know housing for the program is different, and we have the option to take classes others are not able to take.

only 20? Really? hmmm I thought they invited more people than that

I think more kids are invited but about 20 end up choosing the program. You can also apply into the program at any time during your undergrad career, like with the BXA degrees.

so can you participate in this program now and still get out later (before august) if you find out that you don’t want to do it?

You won’t be choosing your classes until August anyhow, so yes, that would be totally fine I think they won’t force you to stay in an academic program you aren’t sure about. All you’d have to do would be to email the SHS advisor and say you’ve dropped out into just MCS/HSS.

ok thanks completelykate!
