did anyone else apply for AFS?

hey.. has anyone else applied for the AFS scholarship? just wondering because so many people apply for it.

Which AFS scholarship? I know there are many... is this for studying abroad next year, or for college?

oh im talking about the studying abroad for highschool students over the summer/school year, its called the awards for excellence scholarship

Oh, I wanted to apply for that too... when is/ was the deadline? Where are you planning to study abroad?

I applied! What are your country choices?
March 8...I'm counting down.

ladylazarus the application for awards for excellence deadline already passed, but im sure you can still apply to go abroad for the summer.. and they have other scholarships just depends on which country you plan on going to. the website is http://usa.afs.org/

bethlikesun.. i cant wait for the deadline! ahh its making me nervous. my top country choices are panama or argentina (i want to go to a hispanic country really bad), and i really also like australia and the UK. what about you? i hope i get it tho, because i dont think im going to go through AFS unless i get the scholarship..

I can't wait either...mine were Spain, Costa Rica, and Argentina. I applied for financial aid as well, but it's a long shot b/c I live in a freakishly affluent area. Depending on how much manual labor I'm willing to do, I may or may not go without the scholarship. Good luck! Maybe I'll see you in Argentina, lol.

yeahh good luck to you too! that would be so cool if we met up in argentina.. i think they do a preAFS orientation with all the participants, i read that in the brochure. its at some beach, isnt it?

Haha, yeah I think so. My mom's freaked out because, according to the brochure, all anyone does in these countries is picnic and visit the beach.

hahaha yeah, my parents were like.. is it safe??

hey bethlike sun.. what were the four extra peices you included in your application? mine were a letter to the judges, a resume, an award i recieved, and a recc from this leadership retreat i went to with my service hours

I used my resume, a recc. from my 3H Spanish teacher, an Op-Ed article I wrote for the school paper, and an award. I remember finally getting everything into the envelope and sending it; it was basically the most relieving feeling ever. And then of course I get a call from my regional rep. a week later reminding me to send a copy of our tax return, haha. Where are you from? I'm noticing a somewhat rural pattern among the winners. Blarg.

oh you got an actual recc.. thatll look good. i felt bad asking teachers cus they were all busy with writing people's college reccs so i didnt get one from a teacher. but yeah, sending in the application was such a good feeling, i jsut made a few errors on it that i hope will slide. why did they need your tax return? for financial aid right? im from ohio, so yeah i guess id be considered rural. but im not from like southerin conservative hick ohio, im from a city.. so maybe not. where are the winners from? (im sure they dont mind that your from nyc tho)

The distribution of winners is shown at: http://www.usa.afs.org/documents/afxbrochure.pdf

I live in a wealthy suburb outside of NYC...so that's a ***** because it blinds schools and scholarships from the fact that we could use financial assistance. I felt horrible asking for a recc. but at the last minute I realized that it could be included in my four extra pieces. I had it emailed to me, which was convenient because my Chilean teacher made a few punctuation errors. Haha. And hey, looks like about 4 kids from OH got $ last year, one from Cincinnati. And posting on CC has to say something about us, lol.

haha true, posting on this site shows our dedication and hey.. 4 from ohio, 3 from ny (we have a pretty fair chance here)
