I got awarded a Trustee Scholarship for $18,380. Does anyone know anything about this? I thought Penn didn’t give merit scholarships.

No idea but I got the same thing

how did you guys find out about it?

I got one as well. Does it have anything to do with that initiative where households with incomes less than $50000 get their full need met without loans? I found out about it on the My PennPlan Online page where financial aid packages are shown.

Yea i talked to a financial aid officer and they said that incomes less than 50k get their needs met without loans. Its ****** awsome

are you freaking serious??? cuz on my page i have $0 financial aid...what the hell!!!! i thought they just haven't gotten a chance to update it..my family income's <50k...

collegehopeful, what I'm not sure about is whether the Trustee Scholarship is what they use to eliminate those loans. Its description made it seem like it was part merit-based although my profile wasn't that great.

letmepass, either you have a gigantic amount of assets somewhere or you should call them about that.

But I was under the impression Penn gave solely on need with no merit based scholarships or at least I remember reading that somewhere.

the gigantic amount of assets we have are nonexistent.

i'm e-mailing them right now...aargh.

Penn has multiple named scholarships awarded through the financial aid office. They are, simply, a part of your need-based financial aid package, not merit aid.

Some of them have specific requirements set by the donor - for example you might have to be a one-legged flure-player of romanian descent to qualify, but they are all given out as part of an aid package, as long as SFS can finde someone with financial aid who qualifies.

On the case studies page of Penn's financial aid website
http://www.sfs.upenn.edu/paying/paying-pro-case-studies.htm

they give this example:

ROY and his younger brother live with their parents in the mid-west. Roy's parents earn $60,000 and have $7,400 in savings. In addition, they have $98,000 in home equity. Roy has no accumulated savings. Penn expects Roy's parents to contribute $4,300 and Roy, $2,100 from summer earnings. The total expected family contribution is $6,400. Because of Roy's exceptional academic credentials, he was selected as a Trustee Scholar. Trustee Scholars receive packages that meet their need without student loans.

Roy's financial need is determined as follows:

Educational Expense Budget $44,300
Less Family Contribution -6,400
FINANCIAL NEED $37,900

Roy was offered this financial package to meet his need:

Trustee Scholarship $34,950
Federal Work-Study Job 2,950
TOTAL AID PACKAGE $37,900

I think the Trustee Scholarship amount was need based but selection of who received it was merit based. I'm not sure about this year though. I think they just gave it to all people with incomes less than $50000.

That sucks...I have 3500 in loans...whatever though, 14k over 4 years isn't that big a deal.

I got the Trustee Scholarship too -- unfortunately my mother isn't paying the full Parental Contribution portion so I have to fend for the rest -- I'll probably end up with around 40k in total debt.

when did you guys find out about your financial aid amount?? was it already there when you checked your decision?

sorry, but i'm really freaking out here.

We're supposed to get our financial aid amounts at the same time we get our decisions.

btw, for those that did get the Trustee Scholarship, did you guys have incomes <50000, if you don't mind me asking.

Lol yea on the site with the decisions theres a link that says pennonline or something like that just click it and it will take you to your financial aid package. I gotta say this no loan **** is sick

i got a $7000 trustee scholarship, but we make way more than 50k, and have 500k+ in assets. it is probably because i have a brother who goes to penn and it will be 80k a year.

were trustee scholarships the only grants you guys got?

I got a Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) too. I find it weird that I got it since I'm not that poor but I'm not complaining about it.

Yea im under 50k and it came with Penn grant and some other stuff I don't remember
