Did anyone receive this UCB e-mail?

Did you receive one Cali Trumpet? It does feel rather discouraging to those who did not receive it.

A berkeley email requires you to be an admit.

To those who may be discouraged: I would only say that this is not at all a certainty. I was admitted to UCB last year, and I received no such emails. Also, the amount of progress they have made with the transfer apps overall is questionable, given the priority the Fresh. apps receive. They may be rolling the names onto the mailing list as they are admitted, and thus we wont really know who is admitted in the next wave until an official sends out an email campus wide.

i dont think we should take it as discouragement if we havent recieved the email in question. im going to go ahead and congratulate whoever has recieved the emails though. it is likely theyve already been accepted and cal has rolled them unto the mailing list.

@ SFwarrior25: If that is the case, then I’m really pumped lol.

Just to note, I have been e-mailing some faculty members at Berkeley about research opportunities over the past couple of months. Maybe that contributed to the e-mails I’ve been receiving?

emilsinclair,

I have also been receiving those emails from Berkeley.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
Here’s my profile: Applied Math, 4.0 GPA, okay EC’s, Club Cal, good essays

UCStatfinder tells me I’m likely to get in but WHO KNOWS!!! Ahhhh… I can’t wait for decisions!

Haha that’s awesome mikei! I’m really glad that I’m not the only one. It was weird for a few days because it seemed that there weren’t any other applicants that were receiving them. I figured that it was probably just an accident.

However, seeing your stats and knowing that you also received the e-mails does provide me with hope.

I have a 3.74, Phil major, good EC’s/comm service, upward trend.

Lol statfinder says I should be good too.

OH, wait…

Aw man… You know why we’re probably getting these? I think we’re both signed up for UC Berkeley’s summer session.

Aw mannnnn

I am signed up. However, I just signed up a couple days ago. I received my first e-mail (on the bottom of Page 1) about the March 4th protest before I signed up.

What classes will you be taking over summer though?

I’ll be in Genetics and Society and Developmental Psychopathology (woo lol).

I applied to the Co-ops. Did you do the same?

Ahhh, I see… It would be nice if we could get confirmation on whether or not Summer Session-enrolled people are put on the Students mailing list.

I didn’t apply to co-ops because I’ll be living with my dad (just 20 to 30 minutes from Cal.) Actually, I didn’t even know what Co-ops is until you mentioned it… That’s awesome!

I’m taking Into to Peace and Conflict Studies and Linear Algebra… haha I’m really excited to get a taste of Cal’s rigor! GOsh, I hope we got in…

I hope so too man! I visited for my first time a couple days ago. I really really loved it. The view from the Campanile is unbelievable, our tourguide was fantastic, and the food was excellent.

I can’t wait either!

Yeah… Wow… It would be a dream come true. Well, actually, in HS I would never have even dreamed of having a shot at UCB. I used to always say “wow CAL!” every time I saw one of those 'Alumni… CAL" license plate holders that you see here all the time in the bay area. Geez…

Yes, Berkeley is so cool. Did your tour guide take you to the top of the Campanile? I didn’t even know you could go up there! You should check out the view from “Fish Ranch Road” if you ever have the chance. It has a view of the entire bay and also UC Berkeley. It’s amazing.

I’ll definitely check that out. Is that on campus?

Our tourguide did not take us up to the top, but while we were in front of it, I asked if I could go up later on. Fortunately, for a small fee of $2 you can! lol. So, at the end of the tour, the very first thing I did was go to the top of the Campanile. The view was truly mesmorizing.

haha I would also have to agree with you. Being a high school dropout myself (during my junior year) and being truant throughout, I used to never even consider the UC’s a possibility…let alone Cal lol.

I’m really glad that I was failing so badly in high school though. I would have never gone to community college, skipped a grade, saved a boatload of money, and be going to anywhere close to where I’ll end up in the fall. It’s so strange how things work out.

woot! GO CAL!

just if you guys are wondering why you received the emails…it’s because

as i am doing this you guys are probably hating me…

lolz i don’t even know why i’m doing this…

but I too received the emails. BUT! the reason I received them is because I am taking a class there this semester :] and took one last semester! (btw, CAL is the most amazing, wonderful, and dreamlike place in the whole world. you just feel like you’re part of something great when you’re there attending class and stuff. oh God how i wish april 30th would hurry). in doing so, they treat me like a student with campus benefits and a student email…hence the title…student…haha so I received the email through my berkeley email account! but the email is meant for students and frankly I wish I were you guys–because I’m still left guessing about my app status there while you guys can gauge pretty well what will happen next :D!!!

early congrats to you two!

and I hate asking because i’m sure it’s somewhere on this thread, but what is your guyses stats?
like just simple:
gpa
major
ecs: good, great, you will not do better than my ecs, or bad,
essays: good, great, " " " my essays, or bad (why do i even give you guys the “bad option” haha)

I hate this whole “you’ll get in stop worrying” deal with friends and faculty :[. it’s driving me crazy. btw, sorry for the long message :[ i havent been on cc for a while and i’m going a little overboard i know haha

I have not received this e-mail, but it would be nice for someone to confirm this e-mail if it actually means anything. I wonder why some people receive it, while others did not.

@UCBHopeful

ahahahahaha that was such a funny/random suspenseful moment.

Do you think summer school students are put on the Students mailing list? I do not have an email address from Berkeley for my summer school session but I am registered.

@ mikei: Man, I really hope I meet you next year. I think I recall that you were the one pointing out the blatant racism that was evident in that one thread. I remember reading the whole thing and completely agreeing with you. Your knowledge of sociology and class consciousness is really impressive. (And this is coming from a guy who went from Democrat —> Marxist ----> Independent) lol. Anyway, we seem to have parallel, or at the very least, similar beliefs and ideals. It would be awesome if we were in the same club or group next year or something at UCB.

@ UCBhopeful298: As for the email, I have never taken a class at UCB, so I don’t have a student account. All the e-mails I’ve received have been to my personal e-mail address. As I mentioned earlier, I received the “March 4 Protest” e-mail before I ever signed up for summer school, and that is addressed to students. Thus, I’m STILL freaking out over that lol.

As for my stats:

Major: Philosophy
GPA: 3.74
EC’s: Swimming, volunteered 150 hours last semester, PTK, AGS
Essays: I’m pretty confident that they were at least really good.
Strong upward trend (1.0 first semester —> 4.0 last semester in 18 units).

My stats aren’t even that great. I’ve seen plenty of philosophy majors on this board with much stronger stats. However, I have been corresponding with professors at Berkeley through e-mail about research…maybe one of them tipped off admissions??? lol conspiracy! haha anyway, what are your guys’ stats?

God, your description of Berkeley sounds exactly like what I experienced when I visited on Wednesday. I’ve never seen anything like Telegraph. That place totally blew my mind lol. I can’t wait to go visit again in a couple weeks.

@emilsinclair9,

Yeah we should definitely meet up (if we hopefully) get into Cal! haha I’ll be joining political clubs so we’ll probably meet there.

And yeah man, I love politics of difference. Erm… I mean, I hate that it exists but it does and I find it very interesting. I went from being very conservative to being very leftist (after becoming “more” Christian [social justice-oriented]) to being very progressive (after realizing it would be least violent to work slightly within the system in order to transform it.) So, I know how conservatives think and I understand their deeply-seeded (racially/class-based) thoughts and how they incorporate those thoughts passively in their lives and institutions. It came about as a religious conviction (in the bible Christianity and capitalism/materialism/oppression are like oil and water and also worldly institutions are intended to be questioned and tested) and it turned into a passion!

As a social justice-oriented Christian, I do know that there is a large community of like-minded people at Berkeley. This should tell you something as it is often a misconception that all Christians are ignorant Republicans who hate, oppress and are mislead. So, given my example, whether you are personally a mosaic of political/social/religious beliefs, you should find refuge at Cal! And even for those reading this who are more conservative, libertarian or centrist, you guys will also be able to find refuge at Cal. I HAVE met them… Believe it or not, they do exist!

But sadly, as I’m now typing this I have the Difference Politics book in front of me that I’m supposed to be reading. Stupid transferitis!

Are you planning on entering politics with your philosophy degree?

I really appreciate that statement, mikei. Now I’m absolutely certain that Berkeley is the place for me. I grew up in an extremely conservative household, questioned my beliefs, pronounced myself an atheist, had some doubts, pronounced myself an agnostic, had more doubts, pronounced myself an emerging church member, then went back to atheist.

I cannot wait to experience the freedom of mind and opinion that Berkeley offers. Believe me, it is nearly impossible to explore different spiritual and/or political paths while living in a conservative Christian home.

As for this email business, I’m so happy for you guys!! The one constant I am seeing between you guys is that you all are/were closely involved in UCB somehow. I hope it means something very good for you guys, while at the same time meaning absolutely nothing for the people who didn’t get one :)

Major: Cultural Anthropology
GPA: 3.8
EC’s: Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Gamma Sigma, Treasurer Gamma Beta Phi, EMT, English/Statistics Tutor, Photog for College newspaper

I would be one of those (small L) libertarians, and I shouldn’t need refuge. I walk among the enemy everyday :), going to a CCC after going to a public high school. I’ve also become a lot more passive lately, and I’ll be too busy studying at Cal (if I get in) to talk politics at all. And the truth is most people our age are more socially liberal than anything, as am I, so we only disagree fiscally.

Being agreeable to the point of lying should work as well. I’ve decided to stop wasting energy on changing minds, instead choosing to subvert them where I see fit.

Actually no :(. My best friends are all interested in going into politics, however, I don’t think that is where my passion is. If I get into Berkeley, I’m actually planning on switching into a psych/social welfare double major. Ideally I would major in these subjects, go on to get my PhD in child development, and then go back to Berkeley lol to be a researcher and professor.

I’m also considering going onto business school and getting my PhD in Organizational Behavior.

Obviously I’m sort of unclear as to what I want to do as a career, but I’m 18 lol, I have time to figure this stuff out I think.

Initially I had wanted to double in psych/phil, but I think I’ll just keep reading philosophy books as a hobby. I love the various schools of thought and morality/reason, and I’ll stand by Kant to the end haha.

Nevertheless, even though I’ll be majoring in something other than phil, I’ll still be joining tons of clubs and groups that pertain to (but not limited to) humanitarianism, global understanding/empathy, peace & conflict studies (I may minor in that) and other groups of that nature.

I think it’s really unique that you went from being very conservative to progrssive. I’ve rarely ever heard of that, especially because it is very difficult to let go of deeply ingrained beliefs and teachings. That’s great that you were able to dissect the various political/social views and reroute your understanding of people and the world.

lol I’m excited to hopefully be a part of that community that you mentioned at Berkeley with like-minded opinions and beliefs.

Btw what are your aspirations with your eventual degree in philosophy?
