telecom: I assume you were accepted? They want you to attend, and are trying to get you to meet an "alumni leader’, who will presumably try to sell UNC to you.

Of people who got their scholarship letters, are you in-state? I want to gauge how long it would be before i either receive or don’t receive one.

dm0293 - Yes, son is in state.

Received today in Massachusetts!

We live in NC and haven’t yet received the acceptance package. Would someone please briefly tell me what is in it?

They say they invite everyone they are interested in awarding a merit scholarship to Scholarship Day, but know that last year my son did not get an invite, but was awarded a scholarship anyway. I don’t know if his invite got lost in the mail? I say this as a possibility because his likely letter was actually delivered to a neighbor’s house instead of ours and we have had other issues of lost mail. It could also be that scholarships opened up as people declined. I really have no idea. We were just happy to see it.

Schokolade - I know some of the students in my part on North Carolina recieved their packets midweek. If I recall correctly from last year, it included an acceptance letter and instructions on how to accept (either by mail or online). There was also a booklet that gave information on orientation and things that needed to get done once you accepted the offer.

dmo293-We are in state (Greensboro)

We received no Scholarship Day invite. If none comes within next few days, I must say that this could influence DS’s decision to attend. I know he is up against some VERY stiff competition, and his SAT I is not tippy-top (2100), but his SAT IIs are fantastic, he is a National Merit SF, and we live in a very underrepresented area (wilds of Stokes County). Moreover, we really can’t afford UNC without some sort of merit aid.

I was not expecting the Scholarship Day letter for another week or so, but if some have already arrived…well, I am starting to think we may be out of luck. If so few were sent, we really shouldn’t expect to receive one; yet, hoping against hope, we had been semi-expecting one. That may have been hubris on our part, but there you are.

OTOH, it could be a blessing in disguise if DS does not receive an invite, as it will make his decision easier. We are already so torn among several schools. The more data we have (re scholarships and such), the easier it is to resolve the confusion.

My sincere congrats to those who did receive an invite!

Diane

BTW, I know it is unreasonable to semi-expect a Scholarship Day invite. But I honestly did not know that so few invites would be sent or that the competition would be so fierce. In previous years, it seems, boo-koo scholarships were given out, especially to in-state kids, and this naturally led me to conclude that DS had a shot.

I know I am being very silly. Mail from UNC does seem to take forever to reach us; we were among the last to receive the acceptance packet. So, there is yet hope, and I should not jump to conclusions!

Schokolade, where in NC do y’all live? (General area…am not prying!) The major cities do seem to receive UNC mail before the rest of us. :)

Diane

P.S. BUandBC – That is encouraging news. We’ll gladly take merit $$$ any way we can get it – with or without a Scholarship Day invite. :)

So just about 2% of the EA accepted kids will get a scholarship letter? Hmmm, not holding my breath especially because I’m OOS.

LadyD - I don’t think there has ever been lots of merit scholarships. Last year, not counting the Moorehead, Robertson, or Johnston, merit scholarships were only given to 161 out of 3,964 freshman. That’s not too many. If they sent out 100 invites for the first deadline applicants, they’ll probably send out a similar number after the second deadline. From what I’ve read on past posts over the year, it sounds like UNC may offer decent financial aid packets.

My son received the Scholarship Day invite yesterday on the coast. He only got his acceptance package on Thursday.

We just rec’d acceptance letter on Thurs. On Friday, my son rec’d something else. I never saw it & he just gave it a cursory look…something about “Granville Tower the place to be.” I was not expecting a scholarship letter yet if at all. Congrats to those who got the letter! I doubt that my son will attend if no scholarship. That’s probably the only way since I lost my job & our financial picture has changed.

NC Mom, is the event invite to scholarship day also in his MyUNC account? And have you heard of anybody else getting an invite?

Also, has anybody else gotten invites? I was also hoping for one as well (2250 superscored SAT, 4.92 weighted GPA). This is the first I’ve heard of anybody getting an invite this year, so I’m kind of hoping that they didn’t send them out at the same time (I was one of the first to get my packet and I’m 30 minutes away from Chapel Hill, so I prob would’ve gotten it by now).

I also got an invite. I just received it yesterday. It didn’t come with my acceptance package.
It showed up on myUNC account a day or so before the actual letter came in the mail.

My son also got the scholarship invite. Came in the mail on Saturday.

Anyone else got it in their myUNC other than Harambee?

Jessimo, yes if you click on the invites on your My UNC account, the Scholarship Day invite is there. Several on this thread have reported receiving it yesterday by snail mail. My son’s acceptance took a long time to come by mail though, so perhaps your’s is still on its way. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

We checked invites on onyen acct & no invite. Did get a letter in acceptance pkg from Scholarship office with instructions to apply by March 1, but no invite to S’ship day. I’m thinking this means my son’s spot will open- no can afford!

I checked the portal, and I don’t have an invite. Luckily, UNC is affordable for my family and I’ve already accepted. Just means I have to start looking for more outside scholarships!
