Did I get into the J-School?!?

I got admitted to the University on 11-13. On 11-18, I got another letter, this time from the JOURNALISM SCHOOL, that congratulated me on getting admitted to Mizzou AS WELL AS "Pre-Journalism."

Someone wanna tell me what this means?

Thanks.

I hate to break it to ya, but you didn’t get into journalism. You’re in arts and sciences as a “Pre-Journalism” student and can transfer into the journalism school when you’re ready/have proved yourself.

I didn’t get into the Journalism school either.

I’m not a in the J-school (never wanted to be–I’m a bio major) but I do know that this practice (Pre-J then transfer to J-school) is quite common among students there. I’ve rarely heard of someone who worked hard Pre-J and then didn’t get into the J-school. I’m not sure what the motive is behind pre-J/auto acceptance, but here’s my best guess. I believe as a Pre-J major you are required to take something like J1010, which is an intro to journalism (it’s a really easy class–not your typical weeder one), and a few other classes to kind of build up some experiences with journalism and make sure you really want to do it. As I understand it, as a freshman there’s not much difference between Pre-J and auto accepted kids because you’ll all take most of the same gen ed classes anyway. You don’t start doing the cool stuff (writing for the paper, anchoring on the news, etc) until you’re later on in your career anyway, so by then you’ll be par tof the J-school and won’t have to worry about it.

What I’m trying to say is…pre-J isn’t as ideal as automatically accepted, but it’s really nothing to worry about and definitely shouldn’t deter you from Mizzou!
