Hey everyone. So basically I started college this past fall and began feeling completely uneasy within the first 2 days of being there. I hadn’t seen my dad for a good amount of time for 10 years and went through a move this past summer where I didn’t have a permanent place to go and pretty much scrambled all my things together for college from all over the place. Not to mention, I also ended up being halfway around the world from my family and at a school where the longest break is around 2 weeks. After 11 days, I had a meeting with the director of admission and talked about it. I asked for a Gap Year to straighten everything out and he said he would approve it. I ended up heading out shortly after that. My concern is that although I got my Gap Year approved it was very late in the process and kind of awkward in the fact that it was not a generic request and I was already going through orientation at the school. It is also an extremely academic school with an acceptance rate below 15%. Although I have good credentials I didn’t not get in simply by my own merit and was recruited athletically. I kind of don’t have an immediate plan B, and I’m planning on going back, but what do you think about the admission committee screwing me over in the spring because I’m backed into a corner and it would be so easy for them to do. I am worried they believe I am an inconsistent person, maybe an odd ball, and that with the 6+ qualified people that would be applying for my spot one of them might be a safer option.
Are you guaranteed return to your college after the gap year? If not and you could return, I think I would petition to return af spring semester. Am unclear how you were screwed over. If you are ready to return and the school would let you return now. If you are still not ready, seek assurances about your return in the fall. If you are not guaranteed return and your place could be taken by another athlete, apply for another school so you would have an option if this school doesn’t work out.
