Decided into first week of college I wanted to take a gap year.

I’m looking for some help. My situation is kinda confusing. Basically I decided a few days into college I wanted to take a year off, i wasnt sure about my major or the school. Now i decided to leave and I talked to the school and decided on defering my admission. Now I’m super scared because I’m not sure if for those few days I was there I’m going to get charged money or have to pay for finacial aid. The schools policy says all finacial aid will be refunded upon withdrawl… but I didnt withdraw I defered. I’m just trying to figure out if defering is the equivalent to withdrawing if you’ve already been enrolled. Everyday I’m thinking about being charged finacial aid for something I didn’t use. I was there for legit 3 days. I really didn’t plan my college and what I really wanted I’m figuring it out now just scarred I’m going to get a finacial aid bill or bill from the school. Can someone please give me advice :frowning:

Can I still apply to other colleges even tho I deffered to this school?

Check with the school since some schools may not let you apply to other schools if you deferred.

Fin Aid won’t be “refunded.” I think you mean “rescinded.” And yes, you may owe something. In fact, you better look at the policy. You moved in, used their services, etc.

I’m not even sure this is deferring, when you already started. Defer usually refers to delaying your start date. You already started.

THis is, imo, a bigger decision than you just haven’t liked the first days or buyer’s remorse. Or thinking you can do better than this college. Doesn’t even sound like you have a gap plan. Think carefully.

Talk to someone in the Office of Financial Aid at your college. IMO this is something you should have done before you left school.

Were you a commuter? Which school? Where are your adults in this?

I have to concur with @Sybylla … you should speak to your parents/guardian NOW about your decision to withdraw. And I agree with @lookingforward that you aren’t deferring at this point (you would have done that back in April before sending in deposits) you are withdrawing, especially if you have moved into a dorm and been through orientation. However there may be ways, depending on what school you are enrolled at to suspend your enrollment for a semester or a year (students do this often due to illness, tragic events in their family, etc) but there will most likely be financial repercussions either way; you have to remember you took a spot from another paying student, colleges may be non-profit but they still have to pay the bills.
