Did I over pack?

Hi, first time college student and I think I may have over packed clothes. I’m going to DC which has all season, and I’m not looking to bring back clothes during any breaks so I basically brought everything with me now.

Currently I have 3 small/carry on suit cases worth of clothes and two duffel bags of clothes too with two containers 20 gallon container with all my dorm stuff (sheet, hangers, etc). I usually wear most of my clothes all year long like switching up sweaters and jackets even when I went to community college back home.

Have you paid up front for all the luggage?

@Sybylla I’m driving there

Doesn’t sound like too much to me. My D now, she has way too much clothes at college.

Be prepared to keep some of your clothes packed and under the bed. (This is a strategy for dealing with out of season items.) My guess is that you could probably pare down quite a bit. If you are driving, you can probably bring a bunch of it home at Thanksgiving. But I also understand how hard it is to eliminate items when you can’t entirely visualize what your lifestyle will require.

My girls had a lot more than that. They had 10+ handbags, with at least 20+ shoes. They didn’t bother to pack their clothes, they left them on hangers and put large garbage bags over them (took up less space). We had to double hang their closets, bought additional storage for them. FYI - they didn’t bring up a lot of their winter clothes. They generally swapped clothes out during breaks.

@polyscidreamer, I think you’re fine. I’ve heard of students bringing much more. For reference, our daughter is flying, and we will be bringing 3 rolling bags (24-26” high), one with starter bedding, and one carry on backpack. Then we are shipping additional bedding, school supplies, toiletries, room hooks, caddies, desk lamp, etc. from Target and Amazon. Wishing you the best with your move and first year of college!

It sounds like a lot to me. Do you know how much closet and drawer space you’ll have? Is there space for all the luggage and totes?

Be prepared to maybe have to keep some things locked in the trunk of your car.

Thank you everyone!!

@momofasenior1 I’m living in a single and I know how much space o have to store clothes which is a closets and two sets of drawers, but I bough extra storage and plan to keep stuff under my bed as well

Considering that’s all of your clothes for the whole academic year, it’s not too bad. Lots of students coming to DC from different climates are usually encouraged to only bring summer/fall clothing for move-in and make adjustments to their wardrobe over Thanksgiving break. A person usually get by with some hoodies/sweaters and a jacket for the cooler fall days until Thanksgiving.

Good luck with the move and I hope you enjoy DC!
