So I have been emailing back and forth with an admissions counselor at my top choice, but since I wasn't sure if they were a male or female (unisex name), I addressed them by their first name multiple times! I just read an article that said colleges keep all your emails and make note of certain things...
Would it be weird if I just started addressing them by their last name now? Also, how bad is it that I didn't use professional language...? I didn't use short hand, I wrote in the same fashion I am now, but I could have done better!

just call her/him counselor in emails

These kinds of emails aren’t meant to be that formal anyway, and since the email chain has already gone for so long, I think you’ll be fine if you continue using first name.

Most of these admissions counselors are recent grads and don’t want to be formal anyway.

You didn’t screw anything up.

Many admissions officers are on linkedin, you could see if they have a photo on their profile and start addressing them with the correct honorific (had to look that one up…). But it’s probably not a big deal anyway.

You could look up his Or her LinkedIn profile. Make one of your own while you’re at it.

Whoops. Must have been typing at same time as ormdad.

@dyiu13 Almost an hour after in fact ;)

This happened to my son. He was emailing a college rep with an androgynous name and he picked the wrong pronoun. The rep corrected him and went on. Son attends the college and everything is fine.

Just don’t keep emailing then and pester if it isn’t important. Sounds like you have emailed enough at this point anyway.

@BrownParent I’ve sent a total of two emails

People with names like Chris or Pat are used to being called by the wrong pronoun. Heck, my name is clearly a female name and I’ve received my share of mail to ‘Mr.’ Men named Kim and Leslie and Robin are probably addressed as Miss more often than Mr.

Don’t worry about it.
