I did get into u of m Ann Arbor but not ross. What should I do? What are the benefits of attending a business school. I also got into the Kelly school of business but really wanted to go to Ross. Don’t know what to do. If I just attend u of m LSA - what should I major in? Is it ok just to go to business school when Im pursuing my MBA later?
It is important to understand that economics and finance are very different majors. Economics is a liberal arts course of study and gets very theoretical at the upper levels. In contrast if you go to an undergraduate business school you will take a business core with introductory classes in subjects such as accounting, finance, IT, marketing etc. and then you will major in one of those disciplines. I’m not saying that one path is better than the other, but they are different. I would take the time to look at the coursework (can be found online) for both a finance and an economics major and see if one path is preferable to you. If you want to study business as an undergrad Kelley is a great option to have.
And FWIW for a MBA you don’t need any particular undergraduate major.
Generally, all you need is some management experience (no matter what your undergrad) for the better MBA schools. That could be anything from supervising an Opera company to running tech support at a call center. A STEM undergrad degree will make an MBA a lot easier too.
Undergrad Information major interested in an MBA as well, I have reached out to a few schools and feedback is that its possible… a Masters in Management is also pretty attractive, but their both different. Look into those routes. Although you don’t have to be a BBA to get an MBA, I know thats for sure.
Michigan has a lot to offer to non Ross kids that want business exposure. My cross campus transfer engineering son who wants to combine engineering and business to go into management just got a $5,000 grant for a club they started through https://www.optimizemi.org/home/ The person that started this group is a Michigan alum that was listed in .like Forbes or Inc magazine for one of the 30 under 30 people. Great mentor. Just awarded last night since they started a club on augmented reality. This was just two months ago. Once they were listed companies started to come to them to give presentations twice a month. Y - combinator(think seed accelerator for airbnb, reddit, Uber, $50 billion dollar company) reached out to them from Silicon Valley through a Michigan alum. They put my son and some other students on their brand new student advisory board. Yesterday they just found out they were awarded a $10,000 grant from https://lsa.umich.edu/bli/bli-fellows/capstone-experience11.html.
They do real consulting in groups for real companies. Many come out of this with real consulting jobs!
There are a lot more organizations like this at Michigan and other colleges also. You can start a startup and get seed money through Michigan etc etc.
These examples all lead to business skills and have nothing to do with Ross. Companies will take notice when things like these are on your resume.
But again, Kelly Business school is great with a great campus. Just don’t ever regret your decision. You never want to say “what if”… If you want business school then go to business school. It shouldn’t make a difference which one.
