Hello you all! This is my first post on the forum.

I started at my community college in Fall of 2011, and I've completed 7 units. I currently have 9 W's, 2 A's, 2 F's, and 1 D on my transcript. In the past, I wasn't committed to my classes. I would enroll in the classes, but then withdraw from them because I would let circumstances get in the way of my education. I have taken a couple of semesters off to really think about my goals in life, and I have decided that I want to receive a college education. During this time I was dealing with the death of my mother and other personal issues, which in my eyes isn't an excuse for not doing well, but I am only human and made some mistakes that I am ready to rectify. Now here is the challenging part. I am currently on progress disqualification from my community college, and they told me I can return after they have seen that I have completed courses at another college. I am now enrolled at Pasadena CC, and I will be taking 9 units this summer, and plan to be enrolled full-time this fall as well.

I want to transfer to a UC, but I am afraid that my chances will be diminished due to my rough academic start. Do I still have a chance to transfer to a UC granting I do well for the remainder of my college experience?

Here's a breakdown of my current transcript:

Fall 2011
Counseling 20 3.0 units A
Student Gov 1.0 units A
Speech 1 3.0 units F

Spring 2012

Summer 2014

I am currently petitioning to have the w's from Fall 2012 removed from my transcript. It's looking good so far. Let me know what you all think. Thank you!!!

I did a quick look and saw that Pasadena CC is in the semester system so these are semester units. UCs say that you need 60 semester units (usually two years since it’s about 15 units a semester, but people have done more or less) to apply so you have some ways of work ahead of you, I hope you’re ready!

I was similar in your shoes. I was doing bad at school and did not feel like it was my fitting. I took a gap year after my first year to work and do self reflection. I found that what I wanted to do involved school (as much as I dislike it) but to get where I want to be I have put in my work studying and doing homework. When I came back I did really well in all my classes. Besides failing one class in Winter quarter of this year, all my grades have been B+ or higher for the school year. Be prepared to do the work. I got into UCLA which I didn’t think was possible after failing but the hard work pays off. Feel free to message me if I can help anymore!

Your academic history will not hurt your chances of transferring to a top UC. Join the honors program when you become eligible, create lasting relationships with faculty, volunteer, and really become a leader on campus. The good news is that, if you really wanted to, you’ll able to transfer with a 4.0 UC GPA if you put in the effort.

The big thing that you’ll need to prove to the admissions officers is that you’ve changed. Understand that you’ll probably need to spend another three years and that your grades need to show an immediate upward trend. When you’re writing your PS, talk about what you went through, how you overcame it, and why you’re a star now/what you’ll contribute to the campus.

Agree with @fullload. Do not worry about the Ws, the UCs won’t care. Get academic renewal for the Ds and Fs, although I believe you need about 12 units with a 3.0 GPA to request that (although it varies by school, and I might be wrong, anyhow). Just keep your eye on the ball in the future and it will be good. When you apply they will simply want to know why you had the ARs and Ws, and you can explain the situation. They just want to know, they aren’t anal about it.

CONGRATS ON YOUR TWO As! I feel a trend emerging …

Yeah, having gone through academic renewal in the past, I’ve found it’s different at every CC. Some have vague requirements like you must “show success” for at least one semester before they will approve AR, other’s have more specific requirements, like 2.5 or better of at least 12-15 units. Also, some only AR D’s and F’s, not C’s, so there’s that. Good luck!

I did have one CC “code out” my W’s from their system, but never quite understood what that entailed. The transcripts still show the W’s, but there’s an asterisk next to them now. Weird.
