Excessive W's

Hey everyone, I'm looking forward to transferring to a UC, but I have one too many W's on my transcript.

Here are the cliff notes about me:
-Graduated H.S in 2006
-Began at Rio Hondo College Fall 2006 (I wasn't serious about my studies)
-By Spring 2010 I had completed a lousy 28 over all units. I had also gathered up 26 W's.
-So at the end of Spring I decided it was time to get serious and transfer out. I quit work and focused on school.
-Fall 2010 I began at East Los Angeles College enrolled in 20 units. I finished the semester with a
3.8
-Winter I took another 3 units and passed with an A.
-Spring 2011 I took another 20 units and once again attained a 3.8.
-This summer I'm enrolled in 6 units and so far it looks like I'll pass with A's for both classes.

So, after this summer I should have 49 units, and after Fall 2011 I should be finished. I understand that the UC system is only accepting Fall transfers, so I wanted to know if I stand a chance at all to get into any of the schools within the UC system. Btw, my major is History.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

i have 21 Ws

^^ Were you able to get into a UC ?

That is insane. Well good luck, I have no idea how UCs looks at that. I think the lower to mid tier UCs will be more forgiving as long as you show you are improving and your gpa is decent.

i have a 3.4 ~3.5 GPA & all pre reqs taken for poly sci. i took college classes when I was in high school, my mother put me in the program, i didnt know what i was doing and was dropping classes halfway through the semester.

Like @Investment said it all depends where you are applying. If you are looking at Cal, LA, SD, then they might weigh the W’s more heavily against you, whereas the other UC’s might be a tad more leniant.

Where are you trying to apply?

I have 14 W’s and I was accepted to UCD, UCI, and UCSD for bioengineering/biomedical engineering which is impacted at both UCSD and UCD.

My overall gpa totaled 3.70 with 150 units complete by the end of my last CC semester.

I don’t think W’s matter too much in the scheme of things. As long as they see that most of them are in your academic past and that you’ve changed patterns. I also put a brief blip about my W’s in one of my personal statements.

Sounds like you’re on the right track to getting accepted. Keep getting those A’s and make sure to complete your prereqs as described by [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) and I think you’ll be an ideal candidate.

p.s. If you’re eager to get out of CC, UC Merced does Spring admits

I had like 7 and got into SB, D, LA, and Berkeley. I just explained why I had them during whatever quarter.

Someone on this board in the past had like 19 and got into LA I think.

I have about 11-12 W’s and I got into UCSD. My GPA is about a 3.2-3.3. I thinks W’s only matter when applying to grad school. For undergraduate it doesn’t matter.

10 W’s, 3.72, IGETC but no TAG, accepted to Berkeley and UCLA. I think they care more about personal statement and upward trend.

@Strengthlikebear: I think dezziner may have been referring to me. I had 19 W’s and got into multiple UCs (including LA and Cal) and some privates. You’ll need to inform the schools you will be applying to just what changed last summer that motivated you to be a more dedicated student. Take responsibility for the previous W’s (don’t just blame your circumstances/environment) and explain how you’ve learned to cope in a way that allows you to complete coursework successfully.

Excessive Ws is usually not a problem as long as you can demonstrate you are capable of academic achievement (which you have since you quit work). It’s important to highlight the fact that your previous (prior to quitting work) record is not an accurate reflection of your ability as a student.

I have 19 W’s. Though they were mostly from some medical reasons when I attended a 4yr in 2006 but I didn’t really stress that on my application since a bunch of them were from my first year at CC too. Overall, I said that yeah I ****ed up but that I’d like to be considered on a basis of what I’ve accomplished, rather than from being lazy and not having my priorities straight when I was a kid.

I’ve been at my CC for 3 years, haven’t dropped any classes in 2 years, and maintained a 3.8x. Also, when I quit my job last Fall, I took 25.5 units in the Fall and 24 in the Spring to 1. get all my classes done… 2. show them that working 60 hrs/wk had somewhat inhibited my academic progress but that I was now in a place where I could solely focus on school.

From what I’ve heard, the problem you might encounter will be if you apply to graduate school though, but I can’t attest to that yet.

killmyentourage for mod!

i am sorry, but something doesn’t sound right about all of this. why would anyone need to withdrawal that many times.

life happens.

a simple statement such as that in no way justifies or provides valid reasoning for an action equating to the level of absurdness found from 10+ W’s.

seriously. i don’t suppose one would make that up, though, as what purpose would that serve them - except to eliminate any competition in our quest for domination and survival in the academic world.

who wants my spot in graduate school at my dream school? here take it…

Can anyone elaborate more on the potential W’s have on graduate school admissions? I only have one W but a few NP’s due to being sick and having to leave school (which I explained in my personal statement, I was straight forward about it). I’m a junior now at UCD, just transferred in for this fall, and will be busting my butt hard for the next two years to hopefully get into UCB’s program for my M.A. in Statistics.

I don’t think too many people on this forum would have much info on that. Check out the Grad School ones.
