Did prayer help you get into your first choice?

I am not religious, didn't pray, and got into my first choice.

God helps those who help themselves.

I didn't pray, because I am not religious, and got into all the schools I applied to except #7 UC Berkeley. Who would have guessed that Berkeley was God's chosen school for believers. Mysterious ways indeed!

philosopher4life:
"GOD" is certainly a foolish idea. It is the biggest mistake of our times.

Any idea that prompt people to kill each other just to prove that their name GOD is greater than some one else name GOD is the most foolish idea of these times.

Tell me one good reason to believe that it is not a foolish idea.

philosopher4life:
Do you any original thoughts or you just believe what is written in books whether it is Bible or Geeta or Kuran?

Idea is foolish can be proven from the statement you added
(Krishna to Arjuna) "Give in your honest effort and follow dharma and leave the fruit of hardwork to me""

If you are giving your honest effort then what you are leaving that is the best you can do. If Krishna comes to rescue Arjuna will he come to rescue Bible follower John or will he say he didn't follow dharma because he is christian.

"GOD" isn't killing anyone. "GOD" never wanted people to kill each other.

Did you know that the Bible was written decades after Jesus' existence? Last time I checked Jesus thought principles of love and affection towards one another. Did you know that the Quran prohibits killing of women and children? What about the fact that "jihad by sword" is a very minor part in a muslim's life? Did you know that the Quran states the best way to live one's self is to live truthfully and honestly?

What about religions that preach tolerance towards one another (ever heard of a belief system named Hinduism or Buddhism?)

People kill People, it's not God.

Given you're such a "logical" and "scientific" person, show me evidence that God indeed doesn't exist.

loslobos71: "That is one of the dumbest things i've ever read in my life."

Since the only things you have read are Bible/Kuran/Geeta, so you won't understand original thoughts because you don't get those.

People who wrote the above text had some original thoughts but mind those were thoughts of those individuals only. But that not make it TRUTH.

I have my own thoughts and don't want to depend on someone else thoughts.

So, to me any idea that causes people to kill each other on the name of GOD is a foolish idea.

Please debate with reasons and don't just show your ignorance and lack of brain all together.

You don't even know anything about Hinduism. We Hindus don't think Christians go to hell or anything. If a Christian leads a life without sins (note practicing another religion is NEVER a sin in Hinduism), he/she will go to heaven under hinduism. We attain "mokhsa" by service to mankind. EVERY RELIGION has considerable over lap on what a "sin" is. Even if you're an atheist and do your "dharma" and help your fellow humans, under Hinduism you'll still go to heaven.

When you don't even understand the context of my quote (Krishna and Arjuna), it's useless explaining things to you.

And just so you know "Geeta" isn't the only book Hindu's trust in. If you knew anything even remotely about Hinduism or Buddhism you'd understand a greater part of our lives consume serving manking.

Show me proof that God intends us to kill people.

philosopher4life : I indeed have heard of Hinduism and how people on the name of GOD have created the caste system and don't even allow one caste to enter their place of GOD.

So don't let me start on that. The idea is foolish since you can see from the point as nothing in this world has happened because of GOD as most of you said and hence there is no existence of GOD.

If something exists it won't let people exploits itself. If people are killing each other on the name of GOD.

and GOD doesn't do anything than GOD doesn't exists.

I don't believe in God because it's written in religious scriptures. I believe in God because the events in my life have proved me that only a supernatural being could've showed direction to my life amongst such turmoil!

Show Me One Religious Scripture In Hinduism That Sanctions Casteism.

Show Me One Place In The Vedas Or The Upanishads Where God States Dalits Cannot Enter A Temple.

God Has Never Been A Justification Throughout Hinduism For The Basis Of Casteism.

Brush up on your religion PoIH.

I've noticed you haven't addressed many of the points on the forum that argue for the existence of god.

If you don't believe in god fine, you don't have to go around insulting other's beliefs.

You're truly the foolish one for being so intolerant.

I encourage you to check out the other pages, too. =)

Kyle David, I've previously mentioned the Bible was written decades after Jesus' existence. I stand by my statement. The state of Bible today is not an accurate reflection on the teachings on Jesus.

With all the genocide, violence, and hunger in the world today, I would hope that God's time would not be wasted by people praying to get into their dream college.

philosopher4life:
I read and read a lot but think too. Have you ever thought about the things written in Vedas and other books or you just read those and believe in?

I won't blame you and it might only be your upbringing.
Most of the people in this world get their knowledge of religion from their family or the close circle of people.

Since a child mind cann't think everything so it register only things told to them and they believe in it. While growing up the circle of superstitions are built around GOD in such a way the child don't dare to ask anything or go against it.

Please come out of this state for once. Drop the notion of your religion and do study from scratch and see if you still believe in GOD

As I've mentioned my belief in Hinduism (and God in general) stems from my experiences. I choose to believe in Swami Vivekananda's school of thought, because it makes sense. Everything he has thought makes sense to me.

I don't follow anything just believe its written somewhere. Are you suggesting if I'm told Osama Bin Laden is the greatest man on the planet, I'll believe in it because I'm a child?

People blindly believing in religion is no different from you believing in US News and World Reports rankings.

I've started with scratch on several occasion PoIH.

If you're interested this was the progression of my religious beliefs.

Agnosticism --- Atheism (where I remained for many years) --- Sri Ramakrishna Math

You know nothing about me and my life, so I respectfully suggest you put aside your notion that I'm some little unsophisticated kid who's been brainwashed by religion.

If you're interested in my upbringing my Dad's side is fairly atheist while my Mom's side blatantly rejects God like you do.

Your demeanor in this Forum is highly disrespectful!

philosopher4life:
"Are you suggesting if I'm told Osama Bin Laden is the greatest man on the planet, I'll believe in it because I'm a child?"

But the way the incidents reflect in this world presently there seems to be lot of people that do believe in it and are brainwashed that is why we had 9/11.

So your belief in something is how justified only depends on what your deeds are. You might not be brandishing arms for "Swami Vivekananda's school of thought" but some one might be. I don't know so cann't quote

but the idea is you cann't stop one from beliving in some unproven things if you do it yourself.

How come you don't know that 300 years from now "Spiderman" is not the next GOD?

If it is just a belief than people can start believing in Spiderman. It is a myth as most of the old religions.

Exactly, you don't know.

Vivekananda's deeds and his justification for a God struck a chord with me, so I believe in God.

BTW, You just contridicted yourself, you've asked for a justification and I've given you one. Now you're stating a justification doesn't matter.

Can you prove that "old religions" are myths?

Exactly, you can't so Shut up.

So now you think ALL muslims believe in killing people. Wonderful, I whole heartedly feel sorry for your daughter.

Onus of proving things are with you. You need to prove that the GOD exists.

I'm not asking you to prove the existence of "Vivekanada's' but the existence of the GOD.

All old religions are orthodox as these are based on mythology. That is why I said there might be some time in future you find people beliveing in "Superman".

There are lots of people in US those believe in Witches/Ghost or Draclua and believe it as a religion.

What will you say about that? Will you now tell me that these are correct to because if GOD exists than SATAN exists too

philosopher4life: You should not talk about GOD, this what I found in my first search itself on Yahoo India on Hindu religion

"Temple purified after minister visit because the minister wife is Christian"

"Temple to be purified after Dalit entry"

"Dalit killed for entering temple"
