did stanford make a mistake...

see this link of the applicant profile of stanford university?

Applicant Profile : Stanford University

in the GPA section, it is divided into categories of 4.0 and above, 3.7-3.99, and below 3.7.

is this an unweighted or weighted figure (im guessing weighted because it says 4.0 and ABOVE).

any ideas?

weightedd.

I'm not so sure crunkk is right. I was told they calculate GPA using a very bizarre esoteric system.

stanford does not recalculate GPA. when i asked an admissions officer about the gpa cateogories, she said to not worry about it. just that most people who apply to stanford and get in have very good (meaning straight a's to a couple of b's here and there) academic records. their percentiles thing is "skewed" she said because every school reports grades differently and they don't take the time to recalculate the gpa. they just look at it in context of the school you went to

They stopped recalculating GPA a couple of years ago (when they got the new dean of admissions)

i think there are different definitions of weighted
i mean, i go to a public school, and I have a 4.0 UNWEIGHTED gpa
so it might be different between public and private schools
just a guess

a 4.0 unweighted gpa is certainly possible (assuming you got all a's).

so this is a weighted figure? we seem to have some conflicting opinions...

i emailed them about this and still no response....

sooo, is it weighted or unweighted?

Reading the English, I would think that its a weighted GPA. If it wasn't weighted, it wouldn't read "4.0 and above".

it has to be weighted

I wouldn't worry about it honestly, I don't ever trust incoming gpa figures

it is weighted

why wouldn't you trust incoming gpa figures?

as an indication of chances. Especially since in my case my gpa, while a 3.86, consists entirely of college courses

a 3.86 weighted or unweighted gpa?

i wouldnt think stanford lists weighted gpas as most schools weight differently. i know that some schools, including my own, expand upon the a=4, b=3, etc scale by giving an a+ a weight of 4.3, an a a weight of 4, and an a- a weight of 3.7 and so on. im thinking that is likely what is going on, but then again i think it equally likely that stanford recalculates gpa using their own system and is posting those numbers here.

it doesnt matter which gpa they use because in the end, they cant find a way to mix and match you guys, therefore they will use class rankings
