I think it’s really unfair that you guys have been saying that the people who got in didn’t deserve it because they created some sob story in their essay. Talking about hardships you have overcome is not trying to get pity, but a legitimate thing to write an essay on. You should be thanking your lucky stars you don’t have hardships to write about. Additionally, saying that low income minority students are the only ones who got in is ridiculous, almost everyone I know who got in this year is affluent and white. Stop being so childish and taking away other people’s success and look at what you could have done wrong.

^ Yes.

Well put snapebotherer. For many of us we had it extremely easy. I got rejected from la Berk and SD too but I’m also fortunate to atleast get into Irvine/Davis/sb. And I think it is fair that the uc’s pick students that have gone through hardships/ go to an underperforming school. I mean how else do those kids prepare for the future? Sure they have lower stats but its really hard to achieve high academically if your family member was shot during finals or something

Well put snape. So true. I’m first generation/low income, but I didn’t even bother to mention that in my essays and I still got in. So sob stories/low income/first generation can’t be the most influential thing.

To the OP, your GPA isn’t really that high, and that probably hurt you the most.

rejected by UCSD and UCLA but accepted at UC Berkeley.

I know…hella weird

accepted fall 2011 too.

I can’t believe people really think people with “low stats” “surprisingly” got accepted and they should watch out in college because they’re probably not prepared.
I didn’t put any sob stories. My hook? I acknowledged that I was just another first gen Hispanic girl. That’s what my essay was about. I was honest that I never went through any financial hardships because my parents were successful. I would be considered higher middle class. My EFC is 15 K.
But I showed I was dedicated to what I did. I mean, I had a 4.5 W and will graduate high school with 7 AP’s under my belt, CSF Lifetime sealbearer, and Cum Laude.

My title 1 school which is 89% Hispanic doesn’t offer Calculus BC so I’m one of 9 that go after school 4 times a week to learn BC topics and thats additional to our Calc AB class during the day.
I would’ve taken more APs except apathetic low achieving students use all our resources so they can take biology or algebra for like a third time.
This year, AP Environmental Science and AP Chem got cut because they needed the respective teachers to teach prep bio and chem so students can graduate on time.

My EC weren’t anything great but instead of taking so many different ones, I showed I was dedicated to a few and they showed I loved volunteer work because I wanted to do it not because I wanted my college app to look good.

Having a high SAT score doesn’t mean you’re smart or hardworking. It means you did well on a test. People need to stop being so bitter.

Well i kind of had a hardship (which had to do with the fact that the doctor thought i had a medical problem and i was pretty depressed and couldnt focus for a few weeks) in 11th grade, and i dont know how much this counts but in 8th grade someone in my family did have a really bad medical problem for about 4 months, and the 11th grade thing was what killed my GPA first semester but i didnt include that. Honestly I wouldnt want to; pity acceptances dont mean that much in my eyes and it was just for a couple weeks (though it was at the beginning of semester, so it was pretty hard to recover). I hate people who wrote sob stories for their essays; I personally think that it should be based on the future instead of crying about the past. Even if I were to appeal I wouldnt have included that imho its stupid to pick people based on pity.

and haha i do have a lot of awards but i just didnt post them on there. 2nd place in a statte competition, awarded for best volunteer for one of mine, and awarded for some track stuff, etc. I honestly dont even remember the rest LOL.

I guess my hours migh’ve seemed kind of fishy, which might make sense. Honestly thats all I do during weekends LOL. and the work experience: I did 6 days a week of 8 hour work days (internship). Was kind of tough, but totally worth it and i learned so much. For the private I applied to, I got in based on my extracurriculars (they said that), and its a really competitive school prolly ranked above UCSD. For my community service stuff I didnt include the planning either lol. I worked 4 hours a week at one place, which added up pretty fast, and then every month i would do an all day event, so that would be about 6 hours. I honestly dont understand how people DONT have that many hours if they regularly volunteer somewhere on weekends. I guess I just dont study very much so thats why? And yes, I did put in a good 3 hours into sports every day, would come home exhausted then start homework. I enjoy living a life where im on the brink of collapse LOL.

Again does anyone know the phone number???

for UCSD admissions?
1-858-534-4831

^will that get you to a live person? I called on monday and was bounced around until i finally got on hold for a live person then got cut off…

I believe 0 or 9 directs you to an admission officer, but they are usually available from 10am-2 pm (rough estimate), which is extremely inconvenient for most places because school ends at ~2:30. Maybe it’s different in your area. Good luck!

Major does not matter at UCSD. You are accepted to the school and then to the college that your major is in. All you have to do is call the admissions office and a counselor will look over you application. UCSD does not do affirmative action but you do get extra points if you are lower economic status, if first generation, hardships…

I called admissions because i was being contacted by the engineering dept and medical scholars program after getting wait listed. Apparently the school does not always talk to the colleges.

My GPA was 4.25 SAT 2200, ACT 34 a lot of EC and community service…go figure

Got in with 1780 sat
640 math II 680 bio
4.0W/ 3.73UW
First generation, low income, single parent

im surprised…

Appeal

It might be because your gpa is a little low, but asides from that, you were definitely qualified >< all the UC’s were a bit strange this year. I wish you best of luck!

My stats (Accepted):
4.41 W/ 3.95 UW
2210 SAT
780 Math II c, 740 US History

lol i think the major doesnt matter thing is LIE lol. Which makes sense for them to lie about; they dont want kids all coming in and changing their majors after 2 months

I wouldnt appeal to UCSD, even if I did want to go there, because I would probably end up in revelle or smt and wouldnt be able to graduate in 4 years. :/

What about UCLA though? If i appealed there would i have a chance. just wondering.

i think your gpa is a little bit on the lower side. however, i would think that all your ECs would make up for that. check over the application. ARE you sure you made no errors? how come your internship was summer after 12th grade? aren’t you in 12th grade? well, check over your application very carefully to see if you made an error. you should definitely appeal to both UCSD, LA, and Berkeley.

At my school, someone got in contact with probably admissions at LA? well, he got his application reviewed and he was offered admissions.

never lose hope! if you want to attend these schools, fight for a spot!

goodluck!

Gotta ask Chocolatecricket…

If you claim you don’t even want to go here then:

Whats with all the complaining about you not getting in while others did? Clearly you would have taken up an acceptance spot from someone who actually does want to attend this school.

AND

Why are you putting those who did get in down? I’m talking specifically about you putting down anyone who got in with a sob story. Yeah, they have a sob story. Its pretty relevant considering that story may be the cause of why person X got such a low GPA their _______ year of high school which went on to affect their overall GPA. Yeah, they should look to the future, but you’re applying to college, they assume you’re ALL looking towards the future at this point.

this says it all:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-irvine/1108822-why-did-i-get-waitlisted.html#post12235225

Its explains a little…

but the point system wasn’t taken out. It was used along with a hollistic system. The point system (according to my friends who work at the admissions office) was used primarily and then if you didn’t get in based off of that, they used the holistic review to see if they’d admit you.

And also (and I’m sure Astrina and every current student can verify this), your major doesn’t matter when you apply. They use the point system to first see if you qualify to get in, then use the point system to see if you’d get into your desired major if its impacted (in this case, Biology). Take it from someone who got into UCSD but didn’t get into Bio when he first got here (me)

@hellokitty: I meant summer before 12th grade! lol

@astrina: That doesnt really explain much… Based on the posts there i came to the conclusion that they didnt accept me because they didnt think i would take the seat.

thanks everyone, i guess i was really down the past few days so i got a bit annoying on cc. Feeling better now though :). I think ill call them sometime this week and see what they have to say though.
