My daughter, myself, her good friend and mom are planning to drive to SLO to spend Thursday night (Farmer’s Market) and then do a tour on campus on Friday. It’s been difficult trying to schedule something around my daughter’s choir/jazz schedule and she refuses to go during her spring break.

Okay, so now I hear from a current student that we’re ***not ***picking a good time to visit Cal Poly. She said the campus will be dead because most students will have gone home for spring break which starts the 22nd. We’ll be there at the end of finals week, it turns out. And, some kids will be done on Thursday and probably head for home then.

For anyone who is currently a student, is this going to be a major issue? I’m just so frustrated because when we visited in August, school wasn’t in session, so I thought by going now we would have the opportunity to experience an energetic campus.

As it is, my daughter isn’t thrilled with the buildings and landscaping, in general. I keep telling her once she sees a bunch of kids on campus, she’ll forget all about how it “looks”. So now it looks like we might have a repeat of our last visit. :(

The campus probably will be pretty empty by then since most people try to get out of here as soon as their finals are over. I’m sure there will still be some people since finals go all the way till Friday at 10 pm. What I would suggest is to go by the University Union, Library, and dining halls around lunch or dinner time. That way you will be able to see some students just hanging out and having fun. Maybe also walk by the dorms if you can. I’m sure at least a few people will be left, I know I (unfortunately) will be.

I sure hope that your daughter likes her visit! I know how much you love CP, but she is really the one who needs to love it! I hope there will be enough people there to help her get the feel for it. Maybe she will like seeing some students who are happy to be done with finals and getting ready to leave for spring break.

We are going to visit during my son’s spring break. (The week of April 5th). The Cal Poly kids should be back by then. He has not submitted the housing deposit and is waiting until he visits to make his final decision between Cal Poly and his other top choice. He has already visited his other choice and really loves it, but it is OOS and much more money. We were going to schedule a general campus tour. He is admitted as an EE major. Is the engineering tour helpful? Keep in mind, his biggest concern about Cal Poly is that he will not get the full college experience since it seems so mellow to him–from the pictures, etc. He is the type of kid who loves sports. I think Cal Poly has a pretty active intramural sports program and does have a football team. While he is a techie type guy, he does love his sports. Does anyone know if many of the students attend the games?

CalMom05, If at all possible, it would be best for your son to attend open house weekend and expecially the Friday (Apr 16th) programs with the Engineering College and especially the EE Department. This event is what sold my son in 2007.

I wanted to visit during our spring break, too. I thought April 9 and 10th would have been ideal. Unfortunately, my daughter doesn’t want to go then. And I’m not sure if her friend and family have other plans. Since my daughter has seen Call Poly before, she doesn’t even plan to take another formal tour. I think she was just hoping to see more student life this time. I just want her to have the chance to look beyond the buildings and meet up with some kids who really love Cal Poly and can share their experiences, both academically and socially.

I’m *really *disappointed that we can’t be there. But, it’s out of my hands since my daughter will be in San Diego with her choral groups at the Heritage Festival that weekend. She doesn’t seem to be bothered at all, so I suppose I should just let it go. Still, it’s disappointing.

Open House - Cal Poly

She and her friend were both accepted. We have a small window of time where they can see the campus in “full swing”. I would have just liked them to experience that. Maybe they can drive back for an overnighter on their own before May 1. It’s just that my daughter’s choir schedule is very busy in the spring. Since this seems to be the only time the four of us can go, we’ll just wing it and hope for the best. Heck, they may end up having a great time, both on and off campus.

I just want visiting conditions to be ideal, considering I went on and on about how vibrant and different the campus will be when school is in session as opposed to our summer visit.

2 Leashes, I would contact admissions at Cal Poly and let them know about the scheduling conflict surrounding Open House. See if they can get you a “private tour” with a student who is in her prospective major. A positive experience with just one current student will go far in creating a positive impression for her. I’ve found admissions to be extremely helpful and welcoming. They’ve admitted your daughter and they want her to enroll…

It was all good! My daughter went with a much more positive attitude this time! Also, I think that it helped she had her friend (also admitted) with her. In fact, I’m thinking it’s making the choice easier for her friend, as well. She had been considering San Francisco State. We keep telling her that Cal Poly has a much better reputation is more of a residential school.

Anyway, even though kids had left for were leaving for spring break, we still saw a number of them on campus. Also, various tours. We decided not to do the formal tour this time. We were able to take a closer look at the dorms and just get a better feel for the campus.

So, all in all, it went well! And, you couldn’t ask for better weather! A lovely 2½ hour drive down there.

There’s a chance that my daughter and her friend might drive back on their own if they want to sit in on a class or get a better look at campus when it’s in full swing. Maybe even during our spring break if they aren’t working all week.
