uphill both ways, right?

Crap, I worked as a caddy the last four summers and finally this year (senior in hs) I was finally able to buy a 95 ford pickup for $3000. Pretty impressed with myself :)

Not at all, just flat sidwalk,.

I sold my car for college. But NYC+Car=disaster.

god, i wish i got a new car for college! haha my 94 camry is running on its last leg!
to your original question…no that’s not really normal…

if you had a choice, pick one:

BRAND NEW econocar (honda, toytoa etc ) v6, low mileage, easy to maintain, standard equipment ~$22-$26k

OLDER luxury car (2007 328i for example) v6, fully loaded with navi (maybe not xenons), almost 50k miles, certified preowned- 6 years, 100k mile warranty. costs more to maintain, premium gas ~$22-$26k

2 every time.

No. My parents helped me out on a 91 volvo 740 Turbowagon. But buy me a car? Hardly, I payed most of it. And new? Definitely not. It had almost 180k on it. Now at 230k it still runs like clockwork.

If your parents make over a million dollars a year then giving you 30k for a new car is the same as other parents with much lower salaries giving their kids 1k for a used one. It’s all relative…

I come from a fairly wealthy Boston suburb and know hardly anyone that received a new car from their parents in highschool or college. Most of the people I know who have their own car either bought used ones or got hand-me-downs.

My parents financed me a car, but my jobs makes the payments. A 2009 Prius. Perfect for my traveling and jobs, but its fuel bladder takes a hit in the New England weather.

I’d take new over used. It’s definitely an expense, but a satisfying expense, IMO.

lol if I made over a million dollars a year I still wouldn’t spend 30 grand on a car for my kid.

Absolutely not normal.

My parents would never buy me a brand new car ever. Unless they hit the lottery big time.

They wouldn’t buy me a car for school, because I live on campus. Maybe maybe MAYBE if I commuted, they’d get me a better car that is more gas-efficient and safer.

They did buy me a car for my 17th birthday. It’s a 94 jeep grand cherokee and it has been a headache of problems since I got it, but I baby it so much because I am really grateful that they bought me anything at all, and I want it to last as long as it possibly can.

I wish my parents would buy me a car. It’s a distant dream. I will probably never get a car…like ever. Public transportation, ftw!

… my parents might give me money for monthly bus pass, if I asked nicely.

I had to pay for my own bike. And I live 1.5 miles away from campus.
Whenever I bring up the subject, they said even if they win the lotto, they will never buy me a car because it’s one of those things you have to earn through hard work (i.e. a job).

My parents let me drive my mom’s '99 paid-off Chrysler Concorde. They simply couldn’t send me off to college AND buy me a brand new car.

I love my car. ^_^

I am already laying the groundwork to get a job in the Ann Arbor area so bf and I can stay here and not have to buy cars for a while. I wish Michigan had public transportation in more places. :(

My mom bought me a Schwinn cruiser.

Talking about cars, I sometimes see this student who drives around campus a Maserati GranTurismo (MSRP $110,000) I’m like WOW.
