To put into perspective my admissions standing, I recently was admitted to Johns Hopkins but was rejected from Northwestern.
The rejection from Northwestern has placed a lot of doubts in my heart about my chances for UPenn, my dream school. Obviously, UPenn is an Ivy League and much more selective than most non-Ivies. Not getting into Northwestern makes me feel like UPenn should be near impossible.
Am I basically correct in thinking this or is there still hope for me?
Johns Hopkins is a very good and very selective university. The same could be said about Northwestern and U.Penn. A year ago both JHU and U.Penn had acceptance rates between 7% and 8%.
However, acceptance rates and “prestige” are a terrible way to rate universities. What athletic league the football team plays in is an equally bad way to rate universities.
There is no way to predict your chances to get accepted to U.Penn. You will just have to wait and see what happens.
You are already in at a GREAT university. If you can afford it, then relax and wait to see what happens. You are going to attend a very good school either in September, or whenever the pandemic is over and students are able to attend university.
Ivies aren’t all more “selective” than non-ivies. Some ivies have the same or higher admit rates than other top rates schools. Regardless, being admitted (or not admitted) to one school does not predict admission to others. My D was admitted to schools with lower admit rates than some of the schools where she was denied/wait listed. At times it’s a very unpredictable process.
I’m friends with someone whose son is currently attending UPenn and was rejected from NU. He really wanted to go to NU - showed a ton of demonstrated interest etc… and was out and out rejected. Two days later he got into Penn. You just don’t know what they want. Good luck!
