I chose P/NP for Linear Algebra and didn’t pass (1% from a C X_X ) I plan to retake it this following semester, for P/NP again as it’s a prereq class. Wanted to know how this affects transfer admissions from a CC to UCs and CSUs. The P/NP system doesn’t affect my CC GPA at all so I assumed it’ll be on my record and UC/CSU admissions will just consider it when they look over apps with similar GPAs. But I also read a vague post that admissions may factor the NP (as an D/F) into your overall GPA and consider that GPA instead. Just wanted to confirm whether they do that or not. Thanks!
A grade of “NP” will not affect your GPA. The UCs do not convert it to a “D” or an “F”. However, private universities and grad schools would most likely consider it as a failing grade and factor it into your undergraduate GPA.
The UCs and CSUs will not care about the NP since you will be replacing it with a passing grade. I believe that NPs are technically neutral on admissions even if not passed subsequently. However, this would not be the case in regard to prerequisites. Either way, it is best to simply retake any class that one does not pass.
Good luck!
Edit: And I am sure you have already verified this, but make sure taking the prerequisite as P/NP is acceptable over a letter grade.
I don’t think you can take major classes as P/NP.
@AgentXJP: You are correct in that you cannot take major classes and required pre-req’s as P/NP. Is this class a requirement for your major?
@Cheolf Thanks for your detailed answer, it left little to be questioned. I’m also relieved to hear it! I appreciate the help you gave. :’)
@Gumbymom Math 254 is one of the prereqs I need to take in order to take Differential Eqs . Some UCs require it for a letter grade but I’m applying to the ones that don’t. I asked the counselor before if I could take it P/NP and they said as long it’s not your major classes, it’s ok. But I’m curious now what you meant by not taking required prereqs as P/NP o: ? Because if so, I might decide to take it for a letter grade this time around if necessary.
Thanks to both of you for answering and have a nice evening!
I have a similar question. I didn’t do so well in my Engl 2 (Critical Thinking) class, but I did pass the class with a C. I was thinking of making it as a Pass. Critical Thinking is not a major prerequisite for me but i know everyone needs it to transfer to a UC. Should i go through with it or do UCs look down on taking an english class as a pass?
@2017UChopeful I think UC’s recommend that both English and Math requirements be taken for a later grade. Just for better clarification I would call the particular school/s in which you wish to apply just to get a definitive answer. Best of luck!
Regarding your English 2 class:
**Each course must be worth at least 3 semester units (or 4-5 quarter units) and be UC-transferable. Check ASSIST to see what courses from your community college are transferable
