Difference between Big and Small schools

Hello! I was just wondering if anyone going to either a bigger or smaller school could give me some valuable insight as to making my final decision. What are the pros/cons? Thanks

the search tool is your friend

I can tell you about small only. DS goes to school of 370 students (coed). He is known by everyone…teachers he hasn’t even had for a class knew who he was by sight as early as October. He is greeted by multiple people as he walks across campus. He competes in sports with kids of all abilities and has seen many of them blossom in a sport when they least expected it. Gatherings and school activities are intimate and he truly feels he is surrounded by friends vs acquaintances. He has the same kids in many of his classes, despite testing levels up for some subjects. While we were visiting him recently, we drove down to Providence to meet a colleague of mine for lunch. A gentleman came up to the table and shook my sons hand and talked to him for a few minutes. It turned out he was the baseball coach … my son doesn’t play baseball nor has he had that man as a teacher. But they knew who each other were and they greeted/talked to each other like they were old friends.

DS is an introvert, so he doesn’t like to be in big crowds or around people he doesn’t know. This isn’t a problem in a small school. He knows almost everyone (even the cafeteria workers) and almost everyone knows him.

@buuzn03, that is exactly what I want in a school environment, and I am somewhat of an introvert, which is why I eliminated A/E. I love how Gov’s felt so personal (and the handwritten note from the interviewer and a science teacher was a very nice touch). I have to admit I didn’t think I would love Gov’s as much as I did, but it may now be my first choice.

@FunintheSun1211 fwiw, DS says that Governor’s had the best sportsmanship of the schools he competed against in fall & winter sports…I think that says a lot about the school, too. Fingers crossed for you!

Thanks @buuzn03, I really hope I get in. Govs started as a safety, but turned to a top choice

@FunintheSun1211 that is what happened with DS and SMS. Not that it was a safety but he put it on the list as an ok school but after the interview, it went from the bottom of his list to the top! And he loves it there!

Thanks @buuzn03 for that summary - this has been our experience at small schools as well.

Just a question, what are the alumni networks at small schools like?
